HOUSTON, Mar. 22 -- NIMBY ("not in my back yard") seems to have claimed another LNG project, this one aborted in California. Calpine Corp., San Jose, Calif., which was in the early stages of investigating the feasibility of constructing an LNG receiving and gasification terminal at Samoa Point, in Eureka, Calif., reported Friday that it has withdrawn those plans. The company said it is ceasing development activities on the project.

"We were looking into the possibility and feasibility of the site, but had not progressed much beyond that," said Calpine spokesman Bill Highlander, who also said the company had talked to other parties about partnerships, but had no partners at the time of the decision and had not yet filed application for any permits.

Calpine, in a release, explained that it "seeks a clear majority of support" for proposed projects. "Based on feedback from the local community and public officials, we believe this decision is best for all parties," said Calpine Vice-Pres. Ken Koye.
