CALGARYA proposal by Talisman Energy Inc., Calgary, to build a sour gas pipeline in the Alberta Foothills region is opposed by environmental groups who have called for hearings on the project.

The pipeline would be located just outside the 1,544-sq-mile Bighorn Wildland Recreation Area. Talisman has applied for regulatory approval to build 25 miles of sour gas pipelines and associated facilities near Nordegg, Alta.

Environmentalists say the pipeline, drilling, and logging are a threat to the area.

Talisman says the project would be outside the area and would tie together natural gas wells already drilled. The company said the line would be in a relatively developed area and it will try to minimize the impact.

The Alberta Energy and Utilities Board said objections to the project are being considered and a decision will be made on a possible public hearing.
