Siemens AG has completed upgrades to high-voltage substations at Kuwait National Petroleum Co.’s Mina Abdullah and Mina Al Ahmadi refineries in southern Kuwait as part of a greenfield development to increase power stability and expand crude processing capacities at the refineries under KNPC’s Clean Fuels Project (CFP) (OGJ Online, Apr. 1, 2013).
As part of a $225.5-million contract, Siemens delivered and installed its proprietary 132 kv AHRF C substation at Mina Al Ahmadi and a 300/132 kv MARF W substation at Mina Abdullah, as well as provided 250 km of cabling for the project, the service provider said.
The upgrade, which provides the refineries with their own dedicated substations, will enable KNPC’s proposed plan under CFP to rehabilitate, expand, and transform the 270,000-b/d Mina Abdullah and 466,000-b/d Mina Al Ahmadi refineries into an integrated merchant refining complex with a combined crude processing capacity of 800,000 b/d (OGJ Online, Mar. 5, 2015).
KNPC’s CFP, which also will include a permanent shutdown of the 200,000-b/d Shuaiba refinery following construction of the long-planned 615,000-b/d grassroots refinery complex at Al-Zour is due to be completed in 2018 (OGJ Online, Oct. 13, 2015).
