Kuwait taps CB&I for Mina Abdullah I refinery revamp

Further details have emerged regarding a contract Kuwait National Petroleum Co. (KNPC) has let for work related to its Clean Fuels Project (CFP) at its refineries in southern Kuwait (OGJ Online, Apr. 1, 2013).

The national oil company has awarded a $370 million contract to CB&I Nederland BV for engineering and procurement for two atmospheric residue desulfurization units at the 270,000-b/d Mina Abdullah I refinery in Kuwait, according to a Feb. 19 release from CB&I.

The two units included in CB&I’s scope of the project were previously licensed by Chevron Lummus Global, a joint venture between CB&I and Chevron Corp., the company said.

CB&I will execute the Mina Abdullah I refinery project as well as associated work at the 466,000-b/d Mina Al Ahmadi and 200,000-b/d Shuaiba refineries as part of a consortium that includes Petrofac and Samsung Engineering Co. Ltd. (OGJ Online, Feb. 12, 2013).

Kuwait's CFP is one of KNPC's major investment projects to upgrade the Mina Abdullah and Mina Al-Ahmadi refineries in order to reach an overall daily production target of 800,000 b/d from the current 736,000 b/d, and—in conjunction with a grassroots refinery construction planned at Al Zour—will nearly double total refining capacity to 1.4 million b/d (OGJ Online, Apr. 1, 2013).
