Sen. Jim DeMint (R-S.C.), a member of the Energy and Natural Resources Committee, during a June 11 luncheon address to the Canadian American Business Council's 2008 annual meeting and conference about oil sands' potential to increase Canada's role as the United States' biggest foreign oil supplier:

"I'm John McCain's new best friend. He's the only thing standing between us and socialism.

"If he could reconsider his stand against [authorizing oil and gas leasing within the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge] in light of new technology, it would make a big difference, particularly in contrast to Barack Obama.

"I'm still uncomfortable with his cap-and-trade position but overall, he would be much better than Obama, who's heavily beholden to radical environmental interests."
