A ConocoPhillips-led joint venture has let a contract to Technip Oceania Pty. Ltd. to supply the subsea production system for the Barossa gas development project in the Timor Sea north of Darwin.

A ConocoPhillips-led joint venture has let a contract to Technip Oceania Pty. Ltd. to supply the subsea production system (SPS) for the Barossa gas development project in the Timor Sea north of Darwin.

Joint venture partner Santos Ltd. said the engineering, procurement, and construction contract represents a commitment to long-lead items in advance of a final investment decision for the project.

The SPS contract includes the engineering, design and fabrication of wellheads, manifolds and control system as well as installation and commissioning assistance.

Santos managing director and chief executive officer Kevin Gallagher said the contract is a big vote of confidence in the Barossa project’s position as the leading contender to backfill gas supply for the existing ConocoPhillips-operated Darwin LNG project.

Gallagher added that good progress is being made in the front-end engineering and design (FEED) phase for Barossa, including an evaluation of bids for the gas export pipeline (OGJ Online, June 18, 2018).

The joint venture also is looking at technical proposals for the floating production storage and offtake facility from both MODEC and the Technip/Samsung Heavy Industries consortium.

“An invitation to tender for the development drilling contract has also been released,” Gallagher said.

Barossa (and nearby Caldita) field is 300km north of Darwin. The project entered FEED in April 2018 and a final investment decision is expected early in 2020.

Santos holds 25% interest in the Barossa/Caldita JV. ConocoPhillips is operator with 37.5% and SK E&S has 37.5%.
