The US drilling rig count gained 5 units to reach 1,008 during the week ended Apr. 13, data from Baker Hughes indicate. The report shows an overall increase of 161 units from year-ago levels.
Offshore units were up 4 to 16 units working in the Gulf of Mexico. A total of 988 rigs were drilling on land, up 1 unit from last week (OGJ Online, Apr. 6, 2018). The number of rigs drilling in inland waters remained at 4 units.
Rigs targeting oil were up 7 units to 815, up 132 from the 683 rigs drilling for oil this week a year ago. Gas-targeted rigs were down 2 units at 192. This time a year ago, 162 units were drilling for gas.
Among the major oil and gas-producing states, Texas saw the largest increase in rigs with 3 to reach 501. Oklahoma added 2 units to end the week at 128. Louisiana, Colorado, and Ohio each added a rig, reaching respective counts of 57, 31, and 23.
Four states dropped 1 unit, namely New Mexico, 89; West Virginia, 16; and Kansas, 1.
Seven states remained unchanged. North Dakota held at 54 units, Pennsylvania at 41, Wyoming at 29, California at 14, Utah at 8, Alaska at 8, and Arkansas at 1.
Canada lost 9 rigs to 102 rigs working from a week ago. There are 16 fewer rigs working than this week a year ago. Oil-directed rigs decreased 7 units this week to 41, while those targeting gas remained dropped 2 units to 61.
