Exploration and production activities in the oil and gas industry continue to push the extremes - deeper water, harsher environments, political and regulatory uncertainty, and skilled labor shortages. The Montara oil spill in the Timor Sea and the Macondo oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico both contain lessons that can reduce operational risk. Regulators are moving in the direction of requiring real time data from the platform to shore to proactively manage these risks. If we can steer a drill bit several thousand meters away, why can't we capture data representing operational risk and present that in a timely fashion to improve decision making? We can.
