Surprising to many, Canada is the No. 1 oil exporter to the United States. Increasingly, these supplies come from Canada’s oil sands in northern Alberta. That province’s estimated oil sands deposits are in excess of 1.7 trillion barrels of crude bitumen. More than $91 billion has been invested in the oil sands in recent years and over $170 billion in oil sands-related projects. Venezuela and California are also heavy oil producers.

Athabasca Oil Corp. said the Hangingstone 1 steam-assisted gravity drainage (SAGD) oil sands project in Alberta started oil production in July with six well pairs converted to production.

The first radio frequency pilot for oil recovery within an in situ reservoir is under way in the Dover area north of Fort McMurray, Alta. In a test that will last about 2 years, radio frequency technology will heat the reservoir to ease the movement of bitumen to the surface.

AER shuts in 16 Murphy Oil sites in Peace River region for noncompliance

Alberta Energy Regulator said it has shut in or partially shut in 16 sites operated by Murphy Oil Co. Ltd. in the Peace River region. The sites were noncompliant with requirements “to capture and flare, incinerate, or conserve all casing gas and tank top gases” from heavy oil and bitumen operations based on a schedule submitted to and approved by AER.

Production ramps up from Sunrise oil sands project

Husky Energy Inc., Calgary, reported that 25 well pairs are now on production at its Sunrise oil sands project in northeastern Alberta. Steaming is under way on 43 of 55 well pairs.
