New whipstock enables short radius sidetracks

This new PathMASTER whipstock system delivers the one-trip and retrievable features of the WindowMaster whipstock with a shorter whipstock ramp and full gauge mills for more efficient short-radius casing exits.

PathMASTER starts, mills, and reams a window exit without requiring a change in the bottomhole assembly (BHA), resulting in a full gauge window in one milling trip.

The system has a quicker kickoff with a higher build rate for short radius drilling applications. The shorter whipstock combines with a milling assembly consisting of only a window mill and watermelon mill to form a shorter window exit BHA. The shorter BHA is capable of passing through higher doglegs in the wellbore.

The system combines the exit milling technology of the WindowMaster and WindowMaster G2 whipstock systems with a 3º whipstock to provide an economical solution for short radius sidetracks, the firm points out.

The system can be set with a TorqueMaster packer-anchor combination or the TorqueMaster bottom trip anchor. The PathMASTER uses patented Metal Muncher technology for faster, cleaner cuts. For use in hard formations, the PathMASTER is compatible with the PathMAKER formation mill.

New wireline jar generates 25,000+ lb of impact force

This new, fully mechanical wireline Blockbuster jar provides more than 25,000 lb of force for cased-hole applications, including extreme depths and harsh wellbore conditions.

Designed to free tools without inflicting damage, the company says its patent-pending jar is suited for solid or braided wirelines. It is field adjustable, suited for fishing operations, and unaffected by high temperatures or pressures.

The Blockbuster resets instantly, instead of in minutes, and offers load-activation settings of 150-3,200 lb. The tool uses this firm's Weight Forward design to put more moving mass into every impact. The Weight Forward design also helps keep string length as short as possible by making supplementary weight bars and acceleration tools optional rather than necessary.

The new jar utilizes stored kinetic energy to maximize impact ratios. When line tension surpasses a preset load limit, indicating a stuck condition, the jar activates and releases its stored energy to deliver the initial impact, which usually frees the string, the company says. If additional impacts are needed, the operator simply decreases line tension to relatch the tool instantly, under its own weight. Blockbuster can be reset repeatedly for an unlimited number of activation cycles—as many as it takes to free the tool.

Software updated for valve control

StarTalk XP for Windows, a software package that directs the StarPac control and measurement valve, is on the market.

StarPac uses sensors mounted on the valve body to measure flow, eliminating the need for downstream metering piping. It accurately measures fluid flow rate over the entire operating range of the valve opening.

As a controlling interface for StarPac, StarTalk XP's Windows-based user interface employs a single, simplified screen for configuration and operation of the valve's functionality, directing as many as 255 StarPacs on a daisy chain network using direct Modbus access.

The software features expanded help files and enhanced signature analysis that includes system and component diagnostics for valves, pumps, and piping.

The diagnostic checks include measurement of actuator air pressure, actuator leakage, valve packing friction, pipe fouling, and pump performance.

StarTalk XP also features graphical proportional integral derivative control that enables proper valve response to process errors, a tuning screen to view and configure controller variables, alarm explanations, and a configurable security setup offering support for passwords and user authorizations. With sophisticated virtual register support, StarTalk XP provides complete integration with a facility's distributed control system or programmable logic controller supervisory computer system.

Compatible with Windows 95, 98, NT, 2000, and XP, StarTalk XP is backwards compatible for configuration files and signatures to the previous StarTalk for Windows version. StarTalk XP also features automatic repair of corrupted configuration files. The system can be run from a desktop or laptop PC.

Mooring plates offer lighter weight, safer handling

Lighter weight mooring plates for safer handling are available to the industry.

The newly designed plates are 3/4 in. thick and weigh 79 lb vs. traditional 11/2 in., 185 lb plates. The lighter weight plates were pull tested at 260,000 lb and witnessed by ABS. Not only was weight saved, but performance characteristics were improved, the company says.

The firm's welding process and stress relieving technology eliminate the need for preheating and slow cooling. The company specializes in reduction of structural weight by engineering and fabricating components utilizing new higher strength steels.
