HYDROTESTING EFFECTS-1 MODEL PREDICTS CRACK GROWTH AND MATERIAL BEHAVIOR

Feb 12, 1990 B. N. Leis, F. W. Brust Battelle Columbus Division Columbus, Ohio The crack-driving force in line-pipe steel material can be expected to increase as a consequence of cyclic load and hold-time effects. These effects are especially evident during hydrotesting. In addition, repeated hydrotesting can cause cracks to grow at pressures less than achieved in a prior test.

LEASE PLAY ERUPTS IN BLACK WARRIOR BASIN

Feb 12, 1990 A Cambro-Ordovician Knox dolomite lease play is mushrooming in the Black Warrior basin of Mississippi and Alabama. Exploration Co. of Louisiana (XCL), Lafayette, La., said the play is an extension of Cambro-Ordovician Arbuckle dolomite exploration near Wilburton, Okla., in the Arkoma basin. Knox and Arbuckle are geologic equivalents. XCL has acquired lease interests lying in 18 northern Mississippi counties and two western Alabama counties in the Black Warrior basin. At its farthest point,

ANOTHER DAKOTA OIL STRIKE HAILED IN WYOMING

Feb 12, 1990 John McCaslin Exploration Editor Oil discoveries in the Greater Green River basin of Wyoming have been few and far between in recent years. But the new strikes have for the most part all been major finds.

TEST IMPROVES MEASUREMENT OF CEMENT-SLURRY STABILITY

Feb 12, 1990 Christopher Greaves, Ashley Hibbert BP International Ltd. Sunbury-on-Thames, U.K. New emphasis must be placed on a cement's settling stability. Many slurries have been found susceptible to settling if designed incorrectly. These slurries include those containing fluid-loss additives, dispersants, large quantities of retarder, combinations of these, and slurries designed specifically for turbulent flow.

TWO N. SEA FIELDS APPROVED FOR DEVELOPMENT

Feb 12, 1990 Two oil field development projects have won the green light in the North Sea. Norsk Hydro gained approval for its 8.4 billion kroner ($1.29 billion) Brage project off Norway. The 240 million bbl field will be developed with a single drilling and production platform linked to the nearby Oseberg crude oil pipeline to the Norwegian mainland. In the U.K. sector, Amerada Hess Ltd. will shortly place on stream Hamish oil field, one of the smallest reservoirs to be tapped off Northwest Europe.

SOME OIL SPILL RECOMMENDATIONS

Feb 12, 1990 In the matter of the Feb. 7 tanker spill of Alaskan crude oil off Huntington Beach, Calif., some recommendations to interested parties: To the petroleum industry. Prepare for another storm of invective from environmentalists and their friends in officialdom. It was a shipping mishap, to be sure. But it was your basic commodity that, at this writing, appeared to threaten popular beaches. Especially in California, that constitutes guilt.

OGJ NEWSLETTER

Feb 19, 1990 The oil spill off California should have no bearing on whether to hold offshore lease sales, says President George Bush (see story, p. 30). He has read a task force's report on controversial California and Florida lease sales and should decide "fairly soon" on their future. Bush said, "The tanker had a hole punched in it, and I see a bunch of guys jumping up and down saying this proves you can't have any offshore drilling...I'm not sure I understand the connection (with) tankers.

BRITTLE FRACTURE OF OLD STORAGE TANKS CAN BE PREVENTED

Feb 19, 1990 Johannes de Wit The Hague Brittle fracture of older storage tanks, that can lead to catastrophic spills of hydrocarbon materials, can be reduced by applying preventive measures based on good knowledge of the critical properties of the tanks, and the critical conditions in which the tanks are used. Some preventive measures include: insulating the tank, not filling the tank to maximum level during lowest temperatures, fully water-testing the tank, repairing serious corrosion, releveling the tank,

PERU'S PRODUCTION, EXPLORATION REBOUNDING

Feb 19, 1990 Peru's oil production is rebounding as state owned Petroperu continues struggling to meet its financial obligations. Occidental Petroleum Corp. boosted oil production on its northern jungle block to 58,000 b/d late last month after resuming field maintenance amid renewed negotiations with Petroperu. Oxy's jungle production had fallen sharply twice in second half 1989 after it halted work on the block because of missed contract payments for delivered oil.

HOW TO SLOW U.S. ABANDONMENTS

Feb 19, 1990 "...If we don't slow abandonments and improve production rates in this decade, there won't be much of a domestic industry left in the next one to benefit from basic research. " That statement comes not from independent producers, who have been saying similar things for some time, but from U.S. Deputy Energy Sec. W. Henson Moore. It correctly recognizes a serious problem-a "sobering reality"-and accompanies fitting remedies.
