SOME OIL SPILL RECOMMENDATIONS

Feb 12, 1990 In the matter of the Feb. 7 tanker spill of Alaskan crude oil off Huntington Beach, Calif., some recommendations to interested parties: To the petroleum industry. Prepare for another storm of invective from environmentalists and their friends in officialdom. It was a shipping mishap, to be sure. The 240 million bbl field will be developed with a single drilling and production platform linked to the nearby Oseberg crude oil pipeline to the Norwegian mainland. In the U.K. sector, Amerada Hess Ltd. will shortly place on stream Hamish oil field, one of the smallest reservoirs to be tapped off Northwest Europe.

TEST IMPROVES MEASUREMENT OF CEMENT-SLURRY STABILITY

Feb 12, 1990 Christopher Greaves, Ashley Hibbert BP International Ltd. Sunbury-on-Thames, U.K. New emphasis must be placed on a cement's settling stability. Many slurries have been found susceptible to settling if designed incorrectly. A FUTURE ARCTIC EXPLORATION TARGET: LOWER PALEOZOIC IN NORTH GREENLAND

Feb 12, 1990 Flemming G. Christiansen Geological Survey of Greenland Copenhagen, Denmark The Lower Paleozoic Franklinian basin in North Greenland occupies an area of more than 150,000 sq km, of which more than half is covered by the Inland Ice cap or dissected by glaciers or permanently frozen fiords (Fig. 1). Most sedimentary units are well exposed and hence the initial assessment of the petroleum potential of this essentially unexplored frontier area concentrates on the study of potential source rocks,

BRITTLE FRACTURE OF OLD STORAGE TANKS CAN BE PREVENTED

Feb 19, 1990 Johannes de Wit The Hague Brittle fracture of older storage tanks, that can lead to catastrophic spills of hydrocarbon materials, can be reduced by applying preventive measures based on good knowledge of the critical properties of the tanks, and the critical conditions in which the tanks are used. Some preventive measures include: insulating the tank, not filling the tank to maximum level during lowest temperatures, fully water-testing the tank, repairing serious corrosion, releveling the tank,

HOW TO SLOW U.S. ABANDONMENTS

Feb 19, 1990 "...If we don't slow abandonments and improve production rates in this decade, there won't be much of a domestic industry left in the next one to benefit from basic research. " That statement comes not from independent producers, who have been saying similar things for some time, but from U.S. Deputy Energy Sec. W. Henson Moore. It correctly recognizes a serious problem-a "sobering reality"-and accompanies fitting remedies.
