REFINERS FOCUS ON MODERN MAINTENANCE TECHNIQUES

Jan 1, 1990 Effective maintenance techniques and modern maintenance technology are critical elements of the safe and efficient operation of refineries and petrochemical plants. The importance of effective maintenance is highlighted each year at the National Petroleum Refiners Association annual refinery and petrochemical plant maintenance conference, most recently held May 23-26,1989, in San Antonio.

DOE PRESSES CLEAN COAL PROGRAM

Jan 1, 1990 The U.S. Department of Energy has chosen 13 more clean coal technology (CCT) projects in its third round of competition. If private sponsors and DOE can agree on final terms, the 13 projects will be financed with $540 million in federal funds and $777 million from sponsors and some state governments. They are to join 27 other active clean coal ventures selected in 1986 and 1988 competitions. The CCT program has projects under way or planned in 19 states.

NEW IDEAS NEEDED IN BOWEN-SURAT BASINS

Jan 1, 1990 Exploration for petroleum in Queensland began in the Bowen and overlying Surat basins in 1908, according to Lindsay Elliott of CSR Petroleum Ltd. in Brisbane. He noted in a paper in the APEA Journal, 1989, that during the next 50 years, a few small fields were found. The discovery of oil at Moonie in 1961 and a number of gas fields on the Roma shelf during the 1960's triggered extensive seismic and drilling programs. This resulted in additional discoveries and the construction of an oil

GAS EXPLORATION FANS OUT MIN ARKOMA BASIN

Jan 1, 1990 Gas exploration is heating up in the South Central Arkoma basin's pre-Pennsylvanian formations. Several operators are targeting Siluro-Devonian Hunton and Cambro-Ordovician Arbuckle limestones in the area, along the Arkansas-Oklahoma state line 50-70 miles east of Arbuckle and Pennsylvanian Spiro-Wapanucka gas plays in Latimer and Pittsburgh counties, Okla.

ULTRADEEP HIGH-PRESSURE WELL TESTED IN AUSTRIA

Jan 8, 1990 J. Moritz, A. Baumgartner OMV Aktiengesellschaft Vienna Specialized equipment and procedures were needed for carrying out a successful flow test of the deepest reservoir, to date, in Europe. The reservoir, located at 20,712 ft, had a pressure gradient of 18.3 ppg mud. Because the shallow formations in the Austrian basins had been relatively well explored (first commercial oil in 1934), it was necessary to change the exploration strategy and drill deeper.

SANTOS TESTS QUEENSLAND OIL DISCOVERY

Jan 8, 1990 A Santos Ltd. partnership plans to begin producing a Southwest Queensland oil discovery in February. The 1 Bowen, drilled on the Naccowlah block of the ATP 259P license area, flowed 3,400 b/d of 44 gravity oil through a 1/2 in. choke on drillstem test of Jurassic Adori sandstone at 5,4845,514 ft. Oil shows also were present in Jurassic Hutton and Westbourne sands, which will be evaluated by testing before the well is cased and completed.

WILDCAT CAMPAIGN NEARS IN NW NEW MEXICO

Jan 8, 1990 One of the most widespread and significant exploratory campaigns in recent years will fire up soon. Merrion Oil & Gas Corp. of Farmington has entered into an option agreement with Santa Fe Energy Co. to wildcat on areas of mutual interest on more than 600,000 acres of Santa Fe-held lands in northwestern New Mexico.

INNOVATIVE IMPROVEMENTS HIGHLIGHT FCC'S PAST AND FUTURE

Jan 8, 1990 Amos A. Avidan, Michael Edwards Mobil Research & Development Corp. Paulsboro, N.J. Hartley Owen Mobil Research & Development Corp. Princeton, N.J. Advances in catalytic cracking led to the invention of a new unit operation-fluidization of fine powders-nearly 50 years ago. U.S. BRIEFS

Jan 8, 1990 PLAINS PETROLEUM CO., Lakewood, Colo., plans further seismic work to define step-out locations to its Minnelusa strike in the Powder River basin in Crook County, Wyo. MRA-Plains 31-28 Federal gauged 630 b/d of 21.7 gravity oil with no water from pay at 7,018-52 ft. Plains and McAdams, Roux & Associates Inc., Denver, each has a 50% working interest in the discovery and jointly own or control about 400 acres in the immediate area.

COMMENT HIGH ENVIRONMENTAL COSTS GIVING U.S. REFINERS COMPETITIVE BURDEN

As a nation, however, we have not chosen to rely solely on domestic sources of energy supply, nor does it seem likely

NORSK HYDRO TESTS OIL ZONE IN TROLL GAS FIELD

Jan 15, 1990 Norsk Hydro has started a 12 month production test of extensive oil reserves underlying Troll gas field in the Norwegian North Sea. The company is using the Petrojarl test ship to produce a single horizontal well drilled into a 72 ft thick oil zone under the western lobe of the giant gas field. The well, in 1,085 ft of water, is producing about 12,000 b/d. If the year-long test is successful, Norsk Hydro could have a floating oil production system operational in West Troll by 1994, 2 years

INTERNATIONAL BRIEFS

Jan 15, 1990 SECOND STAGE of the 960 km Iraqi pipeline across Saudi Arabia (IPSA-2) started up last week, boosting Iraq's export capacity to 3.5 million b/d. IPSA-1, first stage of the $2.7 billion, 1.65 million b/d system, started up in September 1985 with throughput of 500,000 b/d. The system links Iraq's southern oil fields with the Yanbu export terminal on the Red Sea. METHODOLOGY FOR SELECTING PDC BITS CUTS DRILLING COSTS

Jan 15, 1990 Charles Wampler Enron Oil & Gas Co. Corpus Christi, Tex. Kent Myhre Eastman Christensen Houston A bit-selection methodology proved effective for choosing polycrystalline-diamond-compact (PDC) drill bits in Zapata and Webb counties of South Texas. This program reduced drilling days per well up to 50% compared to wells drilled just 10 years ago. This decrease in drilling and tripping time has typically saved more than 30% of authority for expenditure (AFE) dry hole costs.
