POSTPIPELAY TRENCHING JOBS FINISHED OFF INDIA

Sep 10, 1990 Rockwater Offshore Contractors, Aberdeen, has completed three postpipelay trenching contracts in four satellite fields off India. The contracts, in Bombay High offshore area, were performed for Micoperi India, Hyundai Heavy Industries Co. Ltd., and National Petroleum Construction Co. of Abu Dhabi (NPCC). Those companies are contractors for India's Oil & Natural Gas Commission (ONGC). Rockwater, an equal partnership of Halliburton Co. unit 2W Taylor and Smith International Group, used its

KEY MORROW PREDICTIVE EXPLORATION MODEL: SOUTHWEST STOCKHOLM FIELD

Sep 10, 1990 C. Brent Shumard Consulting Geologist Tulsa Loren E. Avis Plains Petroleum Operating Co. Denver The 1979 discovery of Southwest Stockholm field is directly attributable to the reevaluation of an untested and underpressured (1,038 psi at 5,130 ft) lower Morrow sandstone (Lower Pennsylvanian) in a well that appeared to be a dry hole drilled and abandoned 10 years earlier.

MASS MEASUREMENT OF NGL MIXTURES MORE ACCURATE THAN VOLUMETRIC

Sep 10, 1990 Gerald C. Armstrong Phillips Pipe Line Co. Odessa, Tex. Virtually all hydrocarbons are bought and sold by volume, i.e., gallons, barrels, standard cubic feet per meter, liters, etc. But variations in component content and density make it difficult to measure NGLs in this conventional manner. Measuring NGLs first by mass measurement is more accurate. This measurement can then be converted to volumetric terms for commercial transactions.

TESTS VALIDATE FIBER GLASS CEMENT TO PROTECT SUBSEA FBE COATING

Sep 17, 1990 C. Traulsen, N. J. R. Nielsen, T. S. Nielsen Maersk Oil & Gas AS Copenhagen Rock-shield coating on subsea pipelines is a viable alternative to concrete coating when protection against rock dumping is required. Tests and installation experience of Maersk Oil & Gas AS, Copenhagen, indicated this use, provided that special attention is paid to the priming process, cleanliness of the coating applicator, handling of the line pipe, and selection of a suitable plow for trenching.

EARLY SPECTRAL SHAPING BOOSTS DATA QUALITY

Sep 17, 1990 Don W. Steeples Kansas Geological Survey Lawrence, Kan. Reflection seismology is a method of conveying information about the interior of the earth to the surface of the earth. Most commonly the source and receivers are located at or near the surface. This paper is a conceptual discussion of how one may maximize the amount of information received from reflection paths between sources and receivers. Some of the basic tenets of information theory are discussed in simple terms below for

NEW TENGIZ PROCESSING PLANT NEARS START-UP

Sep 17, 1990 John L. Kennedy Editor The first of two trains of an oil and gas processing plant designed to handle high pressure corrosive wellstreams from the Soviet Union's giant Tengiz field is scheduled for start-up later this year. Train two in this first plant to be built in the field is under way, and additional multitrain plants are planned. Tengiz, near the northeast coast of the Caspian Sea (Fig. 1), may be the largest oil field found in the U.S.S.R. since the 1965 discovery of Samotlor in

COMMENT SOVIET OIL OUTLOOK LESS PROMISING IN 1990S

Sep 17, 1990 A.L. Johnson Petroleum Consultant Washington, D.C. Johnson was employed for 10 years in the exploration and production department of Shell Oil Co. and for 22 years in the Central Intelligence Agency as an international oil and gas analyst. Soviet oil production showed signs of age in the mid-1980s as output slipped, recovered briefly, and began a fairly steep decline at the end of the decade.

AVOIDING SEISMIC PITFALLS IN THE U.S. NORTHEAST

Sep 17, 1990 James R. Morris Quaker State Corp. Titusville, Pa. Seismic reflection profiling has become a significant part of most exploration programs, with a growing number of geologists, and sometimes petroleum engineers, responsible for the acquisition, processing, and interpretation of seismic data. The purpose of this article is to identify, discuss, and provide solutions to the most common mistakes that I have made and have seen others make during my last 10 years working in the U.S. Northeast. My

GEOPRESSURED UPPER OLIGOCENE OIL SEARCH SPREADS IN LOUISIANA

Sep 17, 1990 G. Alan Petzet Exploration Editor Exploration for oil in geopressured Upper Oligocene sandstones is alive and well in southern Louisiana. A group led by Helmerich & Payne Inc., Tulsa, Okla., was preparing to set intermediate casing in early September at 1 State Lease 13603, a projected 13,200 ft wildcat just north of the Mississippi River in Iberville Parish. Primary objectives at the wildcat are the Marginulina vaginata sandstone of Upper Oligocene lower Anahuac and Cibicides hazzardi

U.S. OIL AND NATURAL GAS RESERVES SHOW SMALL DECLINE DURING 1989

Sep 17, 1990 The Energy Information Administration reports U.S. oil and gas reserves declined a surprisingly small amount in 1989 in spite of low prices and less exploratory drilling. Proved crude oil reserves dropped 324 million bbl, or 1.2%, during 1989, less than the 1.6% average during the last 10 years. EIA said most of the U.S. decline was due to the 285 million bbl drop in Alaskan reserves in 1989. Lower 48 reserves, at 19.827 billion bbl, were barely lower-51 million bbl or 0.3%-than they were in

INTERNATIONAL BRIEFS

Sep 24, 1990 ISRAEL granted the Negev Venture 2 an additional permit for exploration on the 1.030 million acre Negev Yam North permit area off Israel in the Mediterranean Sea. The acreage stretches 73 miles from Ashdod to Haifa. Isramco Inc., New York, a participant, said the venture plans a three well, $40 million drilling program to test the Jurassic pay found by its 2 Yam well. Two wells will be drilled offshore and one onshore to test Jurassic and Permian on the coastal plain.

ALASKAN CLEANUP CAMPAIGNS SHOW PROGRESS

Sep 24, 1990 The last vessels and crews from Exxon Co. U.S.A.'s 1990 Alaskan cleanup campaign in Prince William Sound and the Gulf of Alaska are demobilizing at Seward and Valdez. That winds up what the company calls "a successful summer cleanup program" in the wake of the Exxon Valdez oil spill. Cleanup efforts ended Sept. 15 to protect personnel from winter storms. "Extensive cleanup efforts, coupled with natural cleansing by winter storms, have resulted in a rapid recovery of Prince William Sound

U.S. BRIEFS

Sep 24, 1990 UTILICORP UNITED'S PSI Inc. unit, Dallas, signed a letter of intent to acquire the Elk City gas gathering and processing system in western Oklahoma from Valero Hydrocarbons LP for about $30 million. The 85 mile pipeline crosses three counties in the Anadarko basin and moves about 75 MMcfd. Processing facilities extract about 150,000 gal/day of liquid hydrocarbons and provide 65 MMcfd to various interstate pipelines.

DRILLING CONTINUES UPWARD MOMENTUM

Sep 24, 1990 Guntis Moritis Drilling/Production Editor The drilling recovery that began during the second half of 1989 is continuing into 1990. On top of this, the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait has caused disarray in oil markets, driving up oil prices, and disrupting access to oil supplies. Potentially, this upheaval could lead to an upward spike in worldwide drilling activity. How long the spike might last or when it might become substantive is still anyone's guess.
