DRILLING SURGES OFF NORTHERN EUROPE

Aug 20, 1990 Drilling activity off northern Europe is climbing to record levels. The number of offshore rigs available in the region has increased to 130; only six are stacked. The midsummer 1990 figures show a considerable increase in drilling compared with the same period of 1989, when the region's rig count totaled 122 available units with 12 stacked. The U.K. sector remains busiest. At midsummer it accounted for 61 of 92 wells in progress off northern Europe. British sector operators were drilling

WHY WELLS HAVE FAILED IN SOUTHERN BELIZE AREA

Aug 20, 1990 Luis A. Sanchez-Barreda Consultant Navasota, Tex. The Sarstun embayment in southern Belize remains, in effect, unexplored for hydrocarbons. The embayment (Fig. 1) on the southeastern flank of the Yucatan peninsula, forms the eastern extension of the thrust-faulted and folded Guatemala structural foreland basin-part of the larger Chapayal basin (Vinson and Brineman, 1963). Two giant oil provinces have been discovered bordering the western margin of the Yucatan peninsula in the northern Chapayal

DUTCH PIPELINE PROJECT CREATING GAS DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITIES

Aug 20, 1990 Two-stage construction of the Nogat gas pipeline from the northern part of the Dutch North Sea to the mainland is opening development opportunities. A series of gas finds will be linked to the new pipeline. The level of development in this area should accelerate as presence of the pipeline encourages exploration along the route. Dutch waters remain mostly a gas play. Gas production averages about 1.7 bcfd, while oil output has slipped below 50,000 b/d.

OUTPUT PROSPECTS TO IMPROVE SOON OFF DENMARK

Aug 20, 1990 Horizontal drilling and an expansion of water injection capacity will improve Denmark's production prospects during the next few years. Crude oil production has been running at 110,000-120,000 b/d, with gas output averaging about 225 MMcfd. Dansk Undergrunds Consortium (DUC)-involving A.P. Moller, Royal Dutch/Shell Group, and Texaco Inc.-feels confident enough about prospects to request an upgrading of capacity in the pipeline that moves oil and condensate to the Frederica terminal on the

INDIA APPROVES NEELAM DEVELOPMENT PROJECT

Aug 27, 1990 India's government has approved Oil & Natural Gas Commission's proposed $1.335 billion full development plan for Neelam offshore field. Neelam, the biggest oil field off India's western coast after Bombay High, is expected to produce as much as 120,000 b/d of oil. Meanwhile, ONGC has submitted a proposal to develop the PY-3 oil and gas discovery off Tamil Nadu, 55 km northeast of Nagapattinam. The PY-3-2 discovery well yielded about 4,000 b/d of oil and 3.5 MMcfd of gas. ONGC

REMOTE SENSING METHOD WORKS IN NORTH TEXAS PRODUCING AREA

Aug 27, 1990 David G. Koger Consultant Fort Worth Dwight M. Ross III Dwight M. Ross Drilling Co. Wichita Falls, Tex. This article demonstrates the effective use of remote sensing photogeology in close proximity to existing production: for identifying areas worthy of closer scrutiny, for staking new locations, and for orienting the cost-effective use of other, more expensive techniques. Remote sensing photogeology principles and their application to frontier areas and mature basins have been discussed

FRIO SUCCESSES BUILD IN SOUTHERN MISSISSIPPI

Aug 27, 1990 Jack S. Moody Mississippi Bureau of Geology Jackson, Miss. How would you like to find a new trend where gas wells can have more than 5 bcf/well of reserves and oil wells yield more than 100,000 bbl from easy drilling to no deeper than 4,000 ft? Such is the circumstance for the long overlooked Oligocene Frio of southern Mississippi. The term Frio has long brought dollar signs to the imaginations of Louisianans and Texans, but it is only beginning to register such in the Magnolia state.

ACOUSTIC MEASUREMENTS DETECT SAND IN NORTH SEA FLOW LINES

Aug 27, 1990 Trond Folkestad, Kanaga S. Mylvaganam Chr. Michelsen Institute Bergen, Norway Clamp-on acoustic emission (AE) transducers have been developed for detecting sand in flow lines on offshore oil producing platforms. Sand production is determined by using the integrated value of measured noise generated by collisions of sand particles on the pipe wall. During the field's life, sand production can do excessive damage and result in expensive repairs that might occur at any time and in any well.

U.S. BRIEFS

Sep 3, 1990 EXXON CO. U.S.A. agreed to spend $2.8 million to upgrade the wastewater treatment system at its Bayonne, N.J., refinery in settlement of a Clean Water Act lawsuit. The suit, filed in a Newark federal court by the New Jersey Public Interest Research Group and Friends of the Earth, alleged Exxon violated its permit for wastewater discharges into Kill Van Kull waterway.

BALANCED FORCES AND FOUNDATIONS KEYS TO RECIPROCATING-COMPRESSOR LIFE

Sep 3, 1990 Phil Applegate Warren Petroleum Co. Division of Chevron U.S.A. Monument, N.M. Reducing the effects of unbalanced forces and vibrations on reciprocating compressor foundations will reduce crankshaft and engine maintenance problems. There are guidelines and strategies for balancing, conducting vibration studies, and designing and maintaining foundations. There is a very large amount of reciprocating horsepower installed throughout the industry.

PERTH BASIN EXPLORATION DUE

Sep 3, 1990 American Shoreline Inc. and J. Paul Rainey, both of Corpus Christi, plan to begin the first phase of a gas exploration program in Western Australia by yearend. As equal partners, Amshore and Rainey were recently awarded exploration permit EP-349 by the state's Department of Mines. The 400,000 acre permit area is in the Perth basin, about 30 miles northeast of Perth. It contains the Gingin, or Bullsbrook, anticline, which is about 40 miles long and 5-6 miles wide. Rainey said the anticline

MOST OPEC MEMBERS AGREE TO HIKE OIL FLOW

Sep 3, 1990 The Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries has given its members a free hand to increase crude oil production to offset the 4 million b/d shortfall of supplies caused by the United Nations embargo of Iraqi/Kuwaiti exports. After the OPEC agreement last week, supported by 1 0 of the group's 13 members at an emergency ministerial meeting in Vienna, Saudi Arabia immediately began to step up its crude production.

AUSTIN CHALK YIELDS OIL NEAR BASALTIC CONE

Sep 3, 1990 A California operator has completed a Cretaceous Austin chalk horizontal oil well near a basaltic cone in the Uvalde volcanic field area of Dimmit County, Tex. The well is the HDP Inc. 1 Autumn Unit, about 9 miles northeast of Carrizo Springs. HDP, which stands for horizontal development and production, of Palo Alto, Calif., drilled the well on a farmout from American Exploration Co., Houston. It initially pumped and flowed 1,600 b/d of oil without stimulation from open hole. HDP drilled

MASS MEASUREMENT OF NGL MIXTURES MORE ACCURATE THAN VOLUMETRIC

Sep 10, 1990 Gerald C. Armstrong Phillips Pipe Line Co. Odessa, Tex. Virtually all hydrocarbons are bought and sold by volume, i.e., gallons, barrels, standard cubic feet per meter, liters, etc. But variations in component content and density make it difficult to measure NGLs in this conventional manner. Measuring NGLs first by mass measurement is more accurate. This measurement can then be converted to volumetric terms for commercial transactions.

THE URGE TO TAX CRUDE PRICE GAINS

Sep 10, 1990 It happens every time: Oil prices surge, and governments rush to snatch away the gain. Something else happens every time: Oil prices retreat, and grabby governments wonder where their revenues and oil finders went.
