Aug 6, 1990 BP CANADA INC plans to cut staff by 170 jobs-about 10% of payroll-under a restructuring. Most layoffs will involve cutting management layers at its Calgary headquarters and at Bonneyville, Alta., where BP owns 50% of the Wolf Lake oil sands project. BP said its aggressive exploration program will not be affected by the cuts.

TUNISIA ATTEMPTS TO ATTRACT MORE OPERATORS

Aug 6, 1990 G. Alan Petzet Exploration Editor Tunisia is renewing its efforts to attract oil and gas companies to explore its territory. About 400 exploratory wells have been drilled and about 100,000 line km of seismic data recorded in the North African country. Four of the five concession or seismic option agreements signed since Jan. 1, 1989, have covered areas near Ashtart oil field in the Gulf of Gabes.

ELLENBURGER, MULTIPAY POTENTIAL SEEN IN KERR BASIN, SOUTH-CENTRAL TEXAS

Aug 6, 1990 Henry W. DeJong Consulting Geologist Littleton, Colo. A regional study and evaluation of the Kerr basin west of San Antonio and southwest of the Llano uplift not only presents new insights into the geologic history of a potentially productive area but supports the conclusion that oil and gas in commercial quantities await the drill.

U.S. BRIEFS

Aug 6, 1990 WESTERN GAS PROCESSORS LTD., Denver, acquired the pipeline assets of Parker Gas Cos. Inc., Tulsa, and its subsidiaries for an undisclosed price. Included were 450 miles of pipeline mainly in the Giddings, Tex., area and their gas gathering and measuring segments. OVERSEAS INDEPENDENTS STEP UP EXPENDITURES FOR E&D IN U.S.

Aug 6, 1990 Kent H. Wall Staff Writer Non-U.S. independent operators are pouring more money into U.S. exploration and development projects, mainly along the Gulf Coast and in the Gulf of Mexico. Some of the operators are working onshore plays elsewhere in the U.S. Major reasons given by executives for the flow of non-U.S. capital are the country's ready infrastructure, accessible lease market, and intriguing new plays. Low taxes and stable government conditions have some effect, but in an age of Soviet

HYDROCARBON CLASSIFICATION RULES PROPOSED

Aug 13, 1990 The French Committee of Technicians has modified the "Terminology Concerning Concepts of Hydrocarbon Reserves" proposed in 1982 1, says Jean Laherrere of Total Cie. Francaise des Petroles (OGJ, Nov. 21, 1983, p. 58). The new version makes a clearer differentiation between the two main approaches for defining recoverable hydrocarbons as a function of: 1. current geological and technical knowledge leading to the classifying of hydrocarbons in place2 that have been identified3 and that are

REVISIONS MAY PACE '89 OIL RESERVES

Aug 13, 1990 G. Alan Petzet Exploration Editor It appears 1989 may have been another big year for large positive revisions of oil reserves in existing fields in the U.S. Nationwide 1989 reserves figures won't be known until late summer, when the Energy Information Administration releases its annual report. EIA's report is the only comprehensive reserves account available, even though several analysts have published reports the past few months based on reserves of the largest companies.

NONASSOCIATED GAS POTENTIAL OF SAN JUAN BASIN CONSIDERABLE

Aug 13, 1990 Dudley D. Rice Charles N. Threlkeld April K. Vuletich Mark J. Pawlewicz U.S. Geological Survey Lakewood, Colo. The San Juan basin is a major hydrocarbon producing province in the Rocky Mountains. Cumulative production for both the New Mexico and Colorado parts of the basin, as of Jan. 1, 1983, was: 190 million bbl of oil, 14 tcf of nonassociated gas, 425 bcf of associated gas, and 60 million bbl of condensate. Ultimate recovery of nonassociated gas was estimated to be 23 tcf.

AMOCO TESTS PAIR OF STRIKES IN NORTH SEA

Aug 13, 1990 Amoco (U.K.) Exploration Co. has tested two discoveries in the British North Sea. Amoco's 15/22-9z oil discovery, in 470 ft of water, lies within the unit area of Scott field Blocks 15/21 and 15/22 operated by Amerada Hess Ltd. It is about 90 miles east of Aberdeen, Scotland, in the Outer Moray Firth area. Drilled to 13,250 ft, the well flowed 8,600 b/d from lower Piper sandstone and 5,500 b/d from upper Piper sandstone. Interests are operator Amoco and Enterprise Oil plc 25.77% each,

PRICE HIKES, FEARS OF OIL SUPPLY CRISIS TRAIL IRAQ ATTACK ON KUWAIT

Aug 13, 1990 Iraq's blitzkrieg seizure of Kuwait has created chaos in world oil markets. At a time when oil demand was relatively soft and oil stocks brimming worldwide, events following Iraq's Aug. 2 invasion of its neighbor, a former Arab ally, have sent oil futures prices rocketing to levels not seen since before the 1986 oil price collapse.

U.K. SECTOR BUSY DURING WEATHER WINDOW

Aug 20, 1990 A yearend deadline for installing emergency shutdown valves (ESVs) on most platform risers in the U.K. North Sea has turned the normal summer maintenance period into one of the most active ever in British waters. The ESVs are required by legislation introduced after the July 1988 Piper Alpha explosion and fire. They will be installed in addition to the normal weather window inspection and maintenance work. A number of operators have started to install subsea isolation valves.

The U.K. sector remains busiest. At midsummer it accounted for 61 of 92 wells in progress off northern Europe. British sector operators were drilling
