PATCHES CURE LEAKY CASING PROBLEMS IN INDONESIA

May 28, 1990 Homer G. Smith Homco International Inc. Houston After repeated cement squeeze failures, casing patches were successfully used to stop casing leaks in a well operated by Mainland Resources (O.S.) Ltd. in Indonesia.

DEVELOPMENT ECLIPSING EXPLORATION ONSHORE

Jun 4, 1990 G. Alan Petzet Exploration Editor Federal tax credits and horizontal drilling technology are fueling a large slice of onshore development in the U.S. So many profitable development prospects are available that exploratory drilling has sunk to the lowest level in recent years in many areas. Total drilling is picking up a little from 1989. The number of drilling permits issued in March rose 11.1% from February 1990, with the biggest increases in California and Texas. The first quarter figure,

KANSAS COALBED METHANE COMES ON STREAM

Jun 4, 1990 William T. Stoeckinger Consultant Independence, Kan. Inexpensive drilling and development costs are contributing to a resurgence in coalbed methane gas production in southeastern Kansas. The Sycamore Valley, 6 miles north of Independence, is witnessing the most successful coalbed methane development in the state (Fig. 1). The primary drilling objective is the Weir coal at a depth of 940 ft. Wells are capable of producing 100 Mcfd of gas.

OPERATORS BOOST OFFSHORE ACTION WHERE LEASES, PERMITS AVAILABLE

Jun 4, 1990 Bob Tippee Managing Editor-Economics and Exploration Bob Williams Senior Staff Writer Offshore exploration and development activity is growing in the shrinking U.S. area where it is allowed. The Gulf of Mexico remains the nation's busiest offshore drilling arena. Brisk leasing during the past several years, the need to replace rapidly depleting natural gas reserves, and the promise of world class oil reserves in water deeper than 1,000 ft drive the action.

SHELL TO ADD NOBLE RIG IN NIGERIA

Jun 4, 1990 Shell Petroleum Development Co. of Nigeria will put a third Noble Bawden Drilling (West Africa) Ltd. rig to work in Nigeria, where it is stepping up exploration/development in response to a government drive to boost oil production. Noble Bawden will provide a modified rig to drill in the inland waterways of eastern Nigeria under a 3 year contract with an option to extend yearly. Noble Bawden will modify its 25,000 ft capacity Lewis Dugger posted barge to work in downhole environments of as much

TOOLS ASSIST IN MAPPING FRACTURED RESERVOIRS

Jun 4, 1990 Santiago M. Reynolds Houston A fracture is any break in the earth's crust, whether or not it causes displacement due to mechanical failure by stress. Fractures include cracks, joints, and faults. Usually thousands of fractures are associated with each fault (Fig. 1).

FINDING, REPLACEMENT COSTS FALL IN ALBERTA

Jun 4, 1990 Canadian Energy Research Institute (CERI) estimates for 1988 long term oil equivalent finding and replacement costs in Alberta show a sharp 5 year decline. Gas finding and replacement costs also have declined greatly in the same 5 year span, CERI figures show. The decreases in Alberta crude oil finding and replacement costs, although not as abrupt as those for gas and oil equivalent, reflect the same downward trend.

RISE IN INDONESIAN EXPLORATORY DRILLING SEEN

Jun 11, 1990 A substantial increase in exploratory drilling in Indonesia during the next 3 years will result from the signing of new production sharing contracts. Far East Oil Report, published by County Natwest Woodmac, Edinburgh, predicts the number of wildcats and appraisal wells in Indonesia to increase from 120 this year to a peak of about 190 in 1993. Exploratory drilling fell from 217 wells in 1985 to 82 in 1987 because of the collapse in crude oil prices and a lack of new production sharing

GRAVEL PACKING FEASIBLE IN HORIZONTAL WELL COMPLETIONS

Jun 11, 1990 Theodore E. Zaleski Jr., Jefferson P. Ashton Baker Sand Control Houston Successful completion of horizontal wells in unconsolidated formations depends on proper equipment selection and installation method balanced with reservoir objectives, formation parameters, and costs. The guidelines for designing these completions are based on generalized field experience, including horizontal cases where applicable.

SANTA FE PRESSES RIG CONSTRUCTION PROGRAM

Jun 11, 1990 Santa Fe Drilling Co., Alhambra, Calif., let a contract to Far East Levingston Shipyard (FELS), Singapore, to build a Monarch class harsh environment jack up. The rig, planned for delivery in early 1992, will be able to operate year round under North Sea conditions in water depths to 310 ft, seasonally to 350 ft. It will be outfitted with three mud pumps, top drive, automatic pipe handling, a high volume mud system, and more than 10,000 hp generating capacity.

TENGIZ HOLDS PROMISE, PROBLEMS FOR SOVIETS

Jun 18, 1990 The U.S.S.R.'s Tengiz oil field near the northeast coast of the Caspian Sea in western Kazakhstan has posed the Soviet Union's most difficult problems in evaluating and developing a supergiant reservoir. Tengiz probably will not be developed enough to permit an accurate determination of reserves until 1995, Soviet geologists say. However, it's possible the timetable could be advanced if a joint venture between Moscow and Chevron Corp. goes into operation and includes Tengiz (OGJ,

MODEL CALCULATES WAX DEPOSITION FOR N. SEA OILS

Jun 18, 1990 A. Majeed, B. Bringedal, S. Overa Norsk Hydro Stabekk, Norway A model for calculation of wax formation and deposition in pipelines and process equipment has been developed along with a new method for wax-equilibrium calculations using input from TBP distillation cuts. Selected results from the wax formation and deposition model have been compared with laboratory data from wax equilibrium and deposition experiments, and there have been some field applications of the model.

PETROCORP STEPS UP WILDCAT PACE IN THAILAND

Jun 25, 1990 New Zealand's Petrocorp Exploration Ltd. is stepping up exploratory drilling in Central Thailand after finding oil and gas in its onshore concession there. Petrocorp 1 Bo Rang flowed 5.5 MMcfd of gas from pay at 2,113-42 ft 6 miles east of the town of Wichian Buri in Petchabun province. Total depth was 5,512 ft. Petrocorp has suspended the well and plans further testing of the Block SW 1 gas strike, the first in the area.

ORYX TO STEP UP HORIZONTAL DRILLING CAMPAIGN

Jun 25, 1990 Oryx Energy Co., Dallas, at or near the top among U.S. operators committed to horizontal drilling, is expanding its operations in the Cretaceous Austin chalk trend of South Texas. Industry is harvesting big oil flows in the trend with horizontal wellbores. In its latest move, Oryx has taken a farmout from Snyder Oil Corp., Fort Worth, covering 38,500 net acres and involving a horizontal drilling project in the trend. Oryx can earn half of Snyder's interest in the acreage by paying certain

DUAL OIL FIND HEATS WILLISTON IN SASKATCHEWAN

Jul 2, 1990 G. Alan Petzet Exploration Editor Saskatchewan appears to have its highest flowing oil wells since completion of several strong Devonian Winnipegosis reef oil discoveries in 1987 and 1988. Mark Resources Inc., Calgary, and Saskatchewan Oil & Gas Corp. (Saskoil) have drilled six wells in an area near Minton, Sask., about 100 miles south of Regina. The Williston basin wells are north of the U.S. border at Sheridan County, Mont. One well was dry, but the others are capable of flowing 500 b/d or
