Amerada Hess farms into Chestnut field off UK

Apr 3, 2001 Amerada Hess Ltd. has agreed to farm in to the Chestnut field on Block 22/2a in UK North Sea. The agreement follows Br�vig Production Services Ltd.'s announcement it would not be able to fulfill its contract to develop the field.

Esso reviews French exploration following depletion cut

Apr 5, 2001 Chairman and CEO of Esso Rep SAF Patrick Heinzle said his company is reconsidering French exploration following the government's move last November to slash the depletion allowance 95%. It posted 2000 profits of 53 million euros, up from 23 million last year. But production fell by 9% to 402,000 tonnes.

Greenpeace activists board second UK North Sea drill rig

Apr 6, 2001 Greenpeace volunteers Friday succeeded in boarding a North Sea drilling rig for the second time this week in a bid to derail oil company drilling campaigns on the UK Continental Shelf. At 0630 BST, six climbers from the environmental activist group scaled the Santa Fe 135 rig on contract to BG International PLC for drilling operations at its Blake field, located 30 km off the Scottish coast on Block 13/24 in the Outer Moray Firth.

Enterprise awards FPSO deal to advance Bijupirá-Salema plans

Apr 6, 2001 Enterprise Oil PLC Friday said it planned to award FMC-Modec�a tie-up between FMC Corp.'s FMC Energy Systems unit and MODEC International LLC�the key $270 million contract to build the floating production, storage, and offloading system for the UK independent's Bijupirá-Salema development off Brazil. FMC-Modec will deliver an FPSO with processing capacity for 70,000 b/d of oil and storage for 1 million bbl, as well as subsea equipment, for the Campos Basin field complex.

Sandia develops disposable fiber optics telemetry for drilling

Apr 11, 2001 Sandia National Laboratories said Wednesday it has developed an inexpensive disposable fiber optics telemetry system to relay real-time information about the drilling process. Unlike other fiber optics systems, it is designed to be used only once.

Sante Fe chooses PPL to build two new semis

Apr 18, 2001 Santa Fe International Corp. said Wednesday that construction of two Friede & Goldman ExD-design semisubmersible drilling rigs would start next month following the award of contract to Singapore's PPL Shipyard PTE Ltd. The rigs will cost about $285 million each and Santa Fe has the option for additional units at a slightly higher price.

Ocean Energy farms into Kerr-McGee deepwater gulf leases

Apr 24, 2001 Kerr-McGee Oil & Gas Corp. and Ocean Energy Inc., Houston, have agreed to jointly explore 181 undeveloped leases that Kerr-McGee holds in the deepwater Gulf of Mexico. The leases are in several proven trend plays in water depths up to 8,000 ft.

Barrett Resources revises reserves with proposed drilling program

Apr 25, 2001 A regulatory decision permitting Barrett Resources Corp. to reduce spacing and drill 202 more wells on 16,000 acres of federal lands in the Piceance Basin will add 212 bcf of proved gas reserves simply because of the physical properties of those tight sands, a company executive said Wednesday.

BP awards design contract for Shah Deniz platform in Caspian Sea

May 1, 2001 BP Exploration (Shah Deniz) Ltd. has awarded KCA Drilling Ltd. a contract for the front-end engineering design of a proposed platform drilling facility for the Shah Deniz development in the Caspian Sea off Azerbaijan.

Deep water, gas, and 'digitalization' emphasized at OTC

May 3, 2001 The 33rd annual Offshore Technology Conference in Houston this week focused on the industry's movement into ultradeepwater operations beyond 5,000 ft, its growing emphasis on natural gas, and the accelerated "digitalization" of upstream operations through computer interconnections, said Wolfgang E. Schollnberger, chairman.

Transocean Sedco Forex drillship sets ultradeepwater record

May 9, 2001 Transocean Sedco Forex Inc. said Wednesday its Discoverer Spirit drillship set a world record by spudding an exploration well in 9,687 ft of water in the Gulf of Mexico for Unocal Corp. The exploration well, on Unocal's Trident prospect in Alaminos Canyon Block 903, beat a record of 9,157 ft of water off Gabon.

Investment analysts see strong oil prices for 5 years

May 21, 2001 After more than a decade of depressed oil prices, the petroleum industry is now in a strong up cycle that should last for the next 5 years or longer, a panel of investment analysts said Monday morning. They spoke at a leadership and outlook conference in Houston sponsored by the Gulf Coast section of the Society of Petroleum Engineers.
