MONGOLIA SET TO BECKON FOREIGN OPERATORS

Nov 19, 1990 G. Alan Petzet Exploration Editor Mongolian Petroleum Co. (MGT), formerly the Ministry for Energy, Mining, and Geology, is trying to disseminate information about Mongolia's oil and gas potential in a bid to attract foreign operators. Exploration Associates International of Texas Inc., Houston, has prepared a report on the country's potential, mainly by translating reports prepared by geoscientists from the Soviet Union, Hungary, Romania, Poland, and the former East Germany.

EXPLORATION EXPLORATORY DRILLING NEAR SAKHALIN ISLAND EXPECTED TO INCREASE

Nov 19, 1990 Matthew R. Silverman Gustavson Associates Inc. Boulder, Colo. The Soviets and their Japanese partners have expressed frustration with recent exploration and production efforts in the Sakhalin Island area. Production levels have remained stagnant, and goals set in the late 1970s have not been met. Current plans call for major increases in exploratory drilling, growth in capital investment in the petroleum sector, and development of at least two offshore fields. To achieve these goals the Soviets

U.S. BRIEFS

Nov 19, 1990 ARCO ALASKA INC. agreed to pay a $200,000 fine to Alaska as a penalty for an August 1989 pipeline valve leak that spilled 300-600 bbl of oil on about 1.4 acres of tundra in Kuparuk River oil field. ARCO also agreed to rehabilitate the spill site and increase its field inspection, maintenance, and testing of pipelines and valves.

HORIZONTAL WELLS-5 FORMATION EVALUATION HELPS COPE WITH LATERAL HETEROGENEITIES

Nov 19, 1990 Michael Taylor Exlog Houston Nick Eaton Eastman Christensen Houston While drilling, maintaining the optimum position of the well bore with respect to productive intervals is paramount to the success of the horizontal well. Even the best understood reservoirs are at the mercy of lateral geological heterogeneities that influence production success. To date, horizontal drilling has targeted fractured reservoirs, thin oil plays, and reservoirs with known coning problems. Some fields are being

RANK SHERWOOD FINDS WARM N. DAKOTA PLAY

Nov 19, 1990 Two discoveries appear to have established the first significant oil production in McLean County, N.D. The discoveries, on the Fort Berthold Indian Reservation, are far south and east of established Williston basin production. Balcron Oil Corp., Billings, Mont., an affiliate of Equitable Resources Energy Co Pittsburgh, is operator of both discoveries. Balcron's 33-15 Wahner, in 15-150n-89w, pumped 130 b/d of 37.6 gravity oil, 115 Mcfd of gas, and 105 b/d of water from perforations at

U.S. E&P TAX INCENTIVES JUDGED INADEQUATE

Nov 19, 1990 About $2.5 billion in energy tax incentives approved by Congress will do little to correct growing U.S. dependence on imported oil, contends Coopers & Lybrand. To reverse the growth of oil imports and move the U.S. toward energy independence would take "substantially more," perhaps $15-20 billion, said John Swords, Coopers & Lybrand's national director of energy taxation. Swords noted that most incentives included in the budget deficit reduction package Congress recently passed (OGJ, Nov.

U.S. BRIEFS

Nov 26, 1990 GRACE PETROLEUM CORP., Oklahoma City, agreed to extend its Michigan exploration joint venture with Wolverine Gas & Oil Co. Inc., Grand Rapids, Mich., through 1993. Grace also acquired Wolverine's working interests in 27 gas wells and eight stripper wells in 12 Michigan fields, along with its interests in two pipelines and a gas processing plant serving those fields,

HORIZONTAL WELLS-6 FORMATION CHARACTERISTICS DICTATE COMPLETION DESIGN

Dec 3, 1990 Cameron White Baker Oil Tools Houston Because horizontal drilling is being applied to more and different types of reservoirs, it is becoming apparent that better completion designs are required to optimize production rates, long-term economics, and ultimate producible reserves. This sixth of an eight-part series discusses the equipment considerations and the benefits of different completion schemes.

W. AUSTRALIA SEARCH RISES

Dec 3, 1990 Exploration in Western Australia is well on the way to recovery from its mid-1980s slump. That's the view of Jeff Carr, the Australian state's Minister for Mines, Fuel, and Energy. Western Australian exploratory drilling is expected to total 36 wells in 1990 compared with 18 in 1989. This is to be complemented by an increase in seismic surveys to 50,000 line km in 1990 from 22,000 line km in 1989. Looking to 1991, Carr said the industry expects to conduct about 80,000 line km of seismic

DEPRESSED R&M, BULLISH UPSTREAM MARK 19.3% RISE IN OGJ GROUP 3RD QUARTER EARNINGS

Dec 3, 1990 Bob Williams Senior Staff Writer Repercussions from the Persian Gulf crisis have caused mixed results in third quarter earnings for U.S. oil companies. Upstream profits in the third quarter generally were up sharply because of the spike in oil prices following Iraq's Aug. 2 blitz of Kuwait. However, earnings plunged for refining/marketing businesses because they were unable to pass through higher crude costs. Higher feedstock costs and dampened demand from a sluggish economy pared

ASIA-PACIFIC REGION SET FOR UPSTREAM ACTIVITY HIKE

Dec 3, 1990 Exploration-production activity in the diverse Asia-Pacific region appears set for a surge. The area's main traditional producers, Indonesia and Malaysia, have taken steps recently to encourage exploration and production. And countries with little or no drilling in the past have begun to make acreage available to international companies.

BEAUFORT SALE DUE TO COVER 3,894 TRACTS

Dec 3, 1990 The U.S. government's Beaufort Sea lease sale next April will offer 3,894 blocks covering 21 million acres. The sale, No. 124, will feature tracts 3-140 miles off Alaska in 6-3,280 ft of waters. Most are in less than 300 ft of water. Leases will be for 10 years with one-eighth royalty. MMS will not offer 1 million acres near Point Barrow that are in the spring lead area, the first open water to be exposed by receding ice. Migratory bowhead whales use those waters, which were not offered

SEAWATER CAN DAMAGE SAUDI SANDSTONE OIL RESERVOIRS

Dec 10, 1990 A.S. Dahab King Saud University Riyadh, Saudi Arabia Experiments have shown that formation damage from waterflooding of the Aramco and Alkhafji sandstones of Saudi Arabia will not occur if the salinity of the injected brines is higher than 20% NaCl. Because the connate water in these reservoirs has a high salt content of up to 231,000 ppm,l Saudi oil fields are almost always susceptible to formation damage when flooded with seawater (about 38,500 ppm).

ULTRADEEP ANADARKO EXPLORATION RETURNS IN HIGHLY PRESSURED WASHITA COUNTY AREA

Dec 17, 1990 G. Alan Petzet Exploration Editor Ultradeep exploration is slowly returning to the Anadarko basin. An Oklahoma City independent spudded a wildcat in Washita County last week that is scheduled to evaluate mainly Siluro-Devonian Hunton and Cambro-Ordovician Arbuckle. The well is Park Avenue Exploration Co. 1-36 USF&G, in 36-9n-17w, about 6 miles southeast of Cordell, Okla. Drilling time to 26,000 ft is estimated at 320-365 days. Parker Drilling Co. has the drilling contract. Park Avenue began

VENEZUELA'S LAGOVEN DETAILS 1995-96 GOALS

Dec 17, 1990 Venezuela's Lagoven SA has outlined its operating goals for the mid-1990s. Lagoven, the biggest operating unit of state oil company Petroleos de Venezuela SA, plans to hike its crude oil productive capacity to 1.63 million b/d by yearend 1996 from about 1.115 million b/d projected at yearend 1990. Lagoven Pres. Julius Trinkunas estimates Lagoven crude production will average 1.445 million b/d in 1996, compared with the current 863,000 b/d. Venezuela is targeting an increase in its
