Korea Gas Corp.’s Incheon terminal is to undergo storage expansion in the next 5 years, along with two others terminals. Total storage capacity among the three terminals will increase by 72% to meet South Korea’s growing demand for gas. Dependent entirely on LNG for gas supply, the country is the world’s second-largest LNG buyer after Japan. Its demand is a primary driver of LNG activity in the Pacific Rim. This issue of LNG Observer devotes its main Issues, Trends, Technologies section (p. 3) to discussions of the region and its LNG growth. Photograph from Kogas. Volume: 4

Observations
Flaring, thermal power, and LNG
Two reports in late summer have implications for the global natural gas industry, especially LNG.

Issues, Trends, Technologies
China, US West Coast markets to push Pacific Rim LNG growth
Pacific Rim LNG markets will see strong growth 2007-11 in expenditures on new LNG plants and terminals.

Nuclear, LNG vie to meet Japan’s energy needs
Japan’s energy policy encourages an increased use of natural gas and nuclear power to mitigate climate change and diversify the energy mix away from oil.

Flexibility keys financing of Pacific Basin projects
Current Pacific Basin market conditions appear to favor new liquefaction capacity.

Project Updates
LNG construction projects, plans move ahead, buck cost pressures
Despite escalating costs of materials and labor, LNG construction worldwide through mid-2007 has continued, with particular progress being made in Asia and the Americas.

Growing demand for crude combined with the slowdown in production of new supplies in other countries is placing the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries in a powerful position, say industry analysts.

Farm interests will say anything to protect the magic money machine that the US government has built for them with fuel ethanol.
