New unit detects, measures VOCs

Here's the MicroFID flame ionization detector.

At 8.1 lb, this small and lightweight unit promises accurate, reliable detection of volatile organic compounds (VOC), including methane.

The company says it is easy to use, with a tutor key to guide the user through basic operation. Critical data are displayed and logged in less than 3 sec within the concentration range of 0.5 to 50,000 ppm, and a simple two-step calibration holds for a full workday.

With a wide linear range, the MicroFID responds to almost all VOCs. The flame ionization detector is stable and virtually immune to possible interferences like water vapor. The tool is also proficient in trouble-free measurement of soil gases where response factor consistency is mandatory and-or where methane must be included in the total reading.

It can monitor fugitive emissions with ease and confidence. Using the built-in data logger, sample points can be recorded. After data are recorded, they can be downloaded to a PC using Windows Hyperterminal and managed by any Windows-based software package.

Designed for field use, the MicroFID is self-contained in a hand-held package and includes a built-in handle and a rubberized keypad that can be easily used while wearing protective equipment. It has an integrated, refillable fuel minicylinder that allows as many as 12 hr of field operation, and replaceable, rechargeable battery packs that operate for 15 hr.

The tool is classified as intrinsically safe in North America and Europe for potentially hazardous environments.

New downhole pump system

The new Moyno insertable progressing cavity (IPC) pump system is engineered to allow downhole progressing cavity pump installation and retrieval without pulling the production tubing.

The maker says this results in reductions in time and related pulling costs. In addition, the system promises operational reliability and flexibility, reducing overall life cycle costs. These systems can effectively handle a range of artificial lift conditions, including low and high-viscosity fluids and the transport of solids. They are engineered for performance in oil field and coalbed methane dewatering applications.

Other features of the systems include:

  • Hold-down devices provide tubing-pump annulus sealing at pump intake and accurate installation at seating assembly.
  • Easy rotor-tag spacing without retrieving pump from the locked position.
  • Flushing operations allowed without disengaging the pump from the seated postion.
  • The landing nipple is the only component attached to the tubing string at the bottom of the hole.

The new IPCs can be installed in 27/8-51/2 in. diameter tubing. No special tools are required for installation.
