North American rig count down 16 rotary rigs

US drilling activity was down this week, dropping 1 rotary rig for a total of 620 working, down 131 from 751 a year ago, officials at Baker Hughes reported Friday.

US drilling activity was down this week, dropping 1 rotary rig for a total of 620 working, down 131 from 751 a year ago, officials at Baker Hughes reported Friday.

The US land rig count fell by 1 unit with 600 working this week. Offshore activity and drilling in inland waters were both unchanged at 20 and 0, respectively.

Canadian drilling activity fell by 15 rigs to 136. The current rig count is up 9 from 127 a year ago.

US drilling for natural gas decreased this week, down 2 rigs to 110. The number of rigs drilling for oil increased by 2 to 508. There were 2 rigs unclassified, down 1 from last week.

Directional drilling increased by 1 rig to 51 this week. Horizontal drilling was up 1 to 557.

Texas saw a 7-rig increase this week to reach 297. The count is down 80 from this time last year. Pennsylvania’s rig count increased by 1 unit this week to 22.

New Mexico and California each dropped 3 rigs this week to reach respective counts of 108 and 3. Louisiana’s rig count fell by 2 units to 39 rigs working for the week. West Virginia dropped a single rig to exit the week with 8 working rigs.
