Whiting Petroleum Corp. has announced the retirement of J. Douglas Lang, Whiting's vice-president of reservoir engineering/acquisitions. Lang joined Whiting in December 1999 and was appointed to his current position in October 2004. His retirement was effective June 30, 2013.

The company has appointed Steven A. Kranker as Lang's successor, effective July 1, 2013. Kranker joined the company in March of this year as first director-acquisitions/reservoir engineering. Prior to joining Whiting, Kranker served as manager-reserves for Bill Barrett Corp.

Approach Resources Inc. has named Craig E. Young vice-president, drilling and completions.

Young has more than 30 years of operating and management experience in the oil and gas industry, specializing in drilling engineering and operations. His recent experience includes approximately 10 years with EOG Resources, where he led the company's development of the Eagle Ford shale play. In this role, Young oversaw the drilling, completions, and production teams and more than 25 horizontal rigs in the Eagle Ford.

Before leading development of the Eagle Ford shale play, Young oversaw the drilling, completions, and production teams for EOG Resources' Barnett shale and Barnett combo plays. He has more than 14 years of experience in increasingly responsible engineering roles with Marathon Oil Co.

Approach Resources is an independent oil and gas company with core operations, production, and reserves in the West Texas Permian basin. The company targets multiple oil and liquids-rich formations in the Permian basin, where it operates 148,000 net acres.
