PERSONNEL MOVES AND PROMOTIONS: Phillips to reorganize key personnel following close of Tosco acquisition

Pending the completion of its acquisition of Old Greenwich, Conn.-based refiner Tosco Corp., Phillips Petroleum Co. has announced the designation of personnel to its new refining, marketing, and transportation (RM&T) unit.

The positions become effective following the closing of its purchase of Tosco, which is expected by the end of the third quarter.

Mike Panatier will serve as chief operating officer of the RM&T organization. Panatier also will retain a position as executive vice-president of the RM&T unit's parent firm.

Tom Nimbley will oversee the operation of the RM&T organization's 11 refineries and will be named senior vice-president of Phillips. Currently, Nimbley serves as senior vice-president of refinery operations for Tosco's refining unit.

Phillips also has appointed the following personnel to the position of vice-president and has named each to head up various RM&T organization segments of operations: Steve Barham, transportation; Mark Harper, dealer-marketer activities; Dave Holthe, retail marketing; Andy Kelleher, supply chain management; Rich Reinken, finance and administration; and Hank Kuchta, business development.

Tom O'Malley, who currently serves as Tosco CEO, will become CEO of RM&T operations and vice-chairman of the Phillips parent firm.

Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Finance Anders Eldrup will succeed Holger Lavensen as president of Danish national company DONG AS effective Aug. 1. Eldrup has held his current position since 1991 and has worked for the Ministry of Finance since 1973.

Eldrup also has served as vice-chairman of DONG and SAS Danmark AS.

Following the successful completion of the merger between itself and Houston-based Midcoast Energy Resources Inc., Enbridge Inc., Calgary, said earlier this month it would reorganize its transportation group.

J. Richard Bird has been named group vice-president, transportation group north. Bird's responsibilities will include all oil, gas, and gas liquids transportation operations in Canada, which will include Enbridge pipelines, its related liquids pipeline operations, and other midstream assets. Bird also will oversee the company's investments in the Alliance and Vector natural gas pipeline systems.

Dan C. Tutcher has been appointed group vice-president, transportation group south. Tutcher will supervise Enbridge's US operations, which include Lakehead Pipe Line Co. Inc. and Midcoast Energy, now renamed Enbridge Midcoast Energy.

In addition to the appointments, Tutcher will become president of Lakehead Pipe Line, succeeding Bird, effective June 1.

John Nikkel has been elected CEO of Unit Corp., Tulsa. Nikkel, who already serves as the company's president, replaces King Kirchner, who cofounded the company and serves as its chairman and CEO. Kirchner will retire as CEO at the of June but will retain his position as the firm's chairman.

Richard S. Farrell has been promoted to vice-president, land, for Prize Energy Corp., Dallas. Farrell joined Prize Energy as manager of land in July 1999. Prior to that, Farrell worked as a senior area landman, South Texas division, for Pioneer Natural Resources Co., Dallas.

Spinnaker Exploration Co., Houston, has elected Jeffrey C. Zaruba to the position of vice-president, treasurer, and assistant secretary. Since joining the company in August 1999, Zaruba has served as treasurer. Prior to joining Spinnaker, Zaruba was assistant controller for Cliffs Drilling Co., Houston, and an audit manager for Ernst & Young LLP.
