Arkla Exploration Co., Shreveport, La., plans exploratory and development drilling this year near new field discoveries in Southwest Mississippi and East Central Arkansas.

Arkla's 1-35 Robertson in Amite County, Miss., flowed at a rate of 265 b/d of oil and 232 Mcfd of gas with 1,751 psi flowing tubing pressure through a 12/64 in. choke from selective Cretaceous Tuscaloosa sand perforations at 12,148-158 ft.

The Robertson discovery, drilled to 12,500 ft, is 3 miles south of the company's 1987 Thanksgiving field discovery. Arkla plans to spud a confirmation well in first quarter 1990.

Arkla holds a 50% working interest in the Robertson discovery and 2,700 acres in the prospect. Its partners are Harry H. Cullen, Houston, and Pennco Energy Inc., Baton Rouge, La., each with 25%.

Arkla also completed 1 Simpson in Faulkner County, Ark., 35 miles north of Little Rock. It flowed 1.987 MMcfd of gas and 199 b/d of water with 782 psi flowing tubing pressure through a 24/64 in. choke from Pennsylvanian Hale sandstone perforations at 4,492-4,504 ft. Total depth is 6,500 ft in Mississippian Fayetteville shale.

The well is 12 miles east of abandoned Greenbrier field, a 1984 Hale sand gas discovery by Santa Fe Energy Co.

Arkla's Simpson discovery is about 8 miles south and slightly east of Quitman field, the Arkoma basin's eastern-most commercial production.

Quitman, a one well field discovered in 1959 in Cleburne County, produced an average of about 50 Mcfd of gas from Pennsylvanian Atoka during 1988, Arkansas Oil and Gas Commission figures show. The well has produced a total of 308 MMcf.

Arkla holds a 59% working interest in 1 Simpson. Nehawka Energy Ltd., Phoenix, and Cullen have 19.7% each.

Arkla in January 1989 began an exploration program with Nehawka and Cullen in the Arkoma basin and Tuscaloosa trend. Spending is to be $40-50 million in the first 18 months.
