Guide To World Crudes: Anniversary, extended life prompt Oseberg Blend assay update

Oseberg is one of the four largest oil and gas fields on the Norwegian Shelf. Current crude oil output averages about 144,000 b/d from the Oseberg field center (OFC), which consists of the connecting Oseberg A, B, and D platforms. Production from nearby Oseberg C, East and South platforms as well as Brage, Veslefrikk, Huldra, Tune and Grane fields also feeds into the stream. Crude production from all Oseberg installations is routed via the OFC and the Oseberg transport system to the onshore Sture terminal near Bergen in western Norway.

The Oseberg field center (OFC) includes three platforms, Oseberg A, B (shown), and D, connected to one another with bridges, in the southern part of Oseberg field, and the Oseberg C platform, which lies 14 km north of the OFC. Photo from Statoil by Harald Pettersen.

While the original production life of the field was estimated to 2017 when it began producing in 1988, new drilling technology and extensive use of gas injection have improved both the field's recovery rate and expected lifetime, according to a recent announcement from Statoil.

With an investment of more than NOK 45 billion (US $7 billion) in the field over the past decade, Oseberg partners Statoil (49.3%), Petoro (33.6%), Total E&P Norge (14.7%), and ConocoPhillips Skandinavia (2.4%) are planning additional upgrades to improve recovery, according to Statoil. Scheduled for completion in spring 2014, the most extensive upgrade currently is under way on the Oseberg B drilling platform, where wells will be both overhauled and drilled.

Estimated recoverable oil reserves for Oseberg field's main reservoir—which has reached a 69% recovery rate—have increased as of 2013 to 2.6 billion bbl from about 1.1 billion bbl in 1983.

Manuscripts Welcome

Oil & Gas Journal welcomes for publication consideration manuscripts about exploration and development, drilling, production, pipelines, LNG, and processing (refining, petrochemicals, and gas processing). These may be highly technical in nature and appeal or they may be more analytical by way of examining oil and natural gas supply, demand, and markets. OGJ accepts exclusive articles as well as manuscripts adapted from oral and poster presentations. An Author Guide is available at www.ogj.com, click "home" then "Submit an article." Or, contact the Chief Technology Editor ([email protected]; 713/963-6230; or, fax 713/963-6282), Oil & Gas Journal, 1455 West Loop South, Suite 400, Houston TX 77027 USA.
