EXPLORATION & DEVELOPMENT BRIEFS

May 23, 2011
Colombia

Colombia's state Ecopetrol reported a heavy oil discovery on the Cano Sur block in the Llanos basin where two earlier stratigraphic wells found evidence of hydrocarbons.

The vertical Mito-1 well, near Quifa oil field in the Puerto Gaitan municipality in Meta Province, yielded 200 b/d of 13.5° gravity oil with 10% water cut from Eocene Carbonera basal sands on a progressive cavity pump. TD is 3,310 ft. The Mago-1 and Draco-1 found hydrocarbon indications on the block last year.

Ecopetrol, operator and owner of 100% interest in the Cano Sur contract area, will continue tests and will proceed with the campaign of more than 10 exploratory wells and further stratigraphic wells.

Guatemala

The board of Quetzal Energy Ltd., Calgary, voted to distribute the company's Guatemalan oil and gas interests to its shareholders in a plan to take effect July 1.

A new public company, RealPetrol Ltd., will indirectly hold the Guatemalan assets. Quetzal's Colombian assets will become the focus of its management and strategic direction.

Subject to approval by shareholders, a court, the TSX Venture Exchange, and regulators, Quetzal shareholders will retain their current interest in Quetzal and will receive one common share in RealPetrol for every 15 Quetzal common shares held. RealPetrol will have separate management and directors.

Uzbekistan

Tethys Petroleum Ltd. signed a contract with an Uzbek geological institute to study the potential of two prospective areas of the Ustyurt basin in Uzbekistan.

Tethys said the study could lead to the company applying for suitable projects in the two areas. The company made the Doris oil discovery in the Kazakhstan part of the basin 35 km from the Uzbek border and noted there has been no commercial oil find on the Uzbek side.

Therefore, Tethys and the Institute of Geology and Prospecting for Oil and Gas Deposits of NHC Uzbekneftegaz, the state oil and gas company, will review materials on exploration areas in the Ustyurt region and the Bukhara-Khiva region. Tethys believes that, by applying the same geological model and techniques used in discovering Doris to the Uzbek portion of the basin, there is good potential for finding oil there, too.

Alaska

Apache Corp. told shareholders it has become the largest acreage holder in Alaska's Cook Inlet with interests in 300,000 acres.

A new ventures map shows the company's acreage extends from northwest of Anchorage to the Homer area. A majority of the acreage appears to be onshore.

While little 3D seismic has been shot in Cook Inlet to date, Apache said an extensive 3D survey is to commence in this year's second half.
