New protection system for downhole motors

The new iMonitor motor protection system is designed for use with downhole electric submersible pump motors and medium to large sized induction motors on surface pumps.

The system can be used as a stand-alone motor controller or interfaced directly to an automated control system. It incorporates modern display technology with control features driven by newer, faster, more powerful microprocessors.

The unit is a fixed-speed motor controller and data acquisition device. To help protect equipment against power line induced faults and other problems that can occur, the control unit continuously monitors input power and motor load conditions. When coupled with the optional iMonitor data logger, the system gathers operating information including system run time, system shutdowns, automatic or manual restarts, and motor current draw. Additionally, to help guard against loss of pump flow, loss of pressure, and other conditions that can potentially damage a pump, the system can monitor external sensors and protective devices.

The modular system includes four main components:

• Motor control unit.

• Remote display unit.

• Backspin relay module and companion backspin probe assembly (optional).

• Data logging unit (optional).

The individual iMonitor components are usually mounted inside a fixed speed motor starter-switchboard. Existing installations can be field retrofitted for improved motor protection.

New software adds multilanguage support

Sysdrill 2009.1 software supplies comprehensive Chinese and Russian translations as well as integration with Epos 4.

The Sysdrill 2009.1 update extends the range and accessibility of the Sysdrill suite, which offers well planning, survey management, anticollision, torque and drag, hydraulics, casing design, cementing, and well control in a single application. Further integration with the Epos system offers Sysdrill users quick and more reliable access to E&P data for collaborative work on large multidisciplinary projects, the company notes. Epos 4 is an open data integration platform scalable from a laptop to full enterprise solution. Sysdrill 2009.1 effectively eliminates previous language-based usage limitations, providing Chinese and Russian-speaking users with access to an advanced well planning and drilling engineering application.
