Fire hits Shell’s integrated processing operations in Singapore

Royal Dutch Shell PLC has extinguished a fire that occurred at one of the units at the company’s Pulau Bukom manufacturing site on Bukom Island, Singapore, which includes a 500,000-b/d refinery, 1 million-tonne/year (tpy) ethylene cracker complex (ECC), and 155,000-tpy butadiene extraction plant.

While the Aug. 21 fire was extinguished by on site emergency responders within an hour of its occurrence, six contract workers suffered burn injuries as a result of the incident, Shell said.

The company, however, identified neither the specific Pulau Bukom plant nor unit at which the fire struck.

Aside from the unit in question, there is no other impact to operations at the manufacturing site, Shell said.

The company currently is working with Singapore’s Civil Defence Force to investigate the incident.

Earlier in the year, Shell concluded a long-planned upgrade and expansion of the Bukom Island ECC, which along with the Pulau Bukom refinery and nearby 750,000-tpy monoethylene glycol plant on Jurong Island, forms part of the company’s fully integrated Shell Eastern Petrochemicals Complex (OGJ Online, Apr. 2, 2015; July 1, 2013; July 27, 2006).
