Colombia’s Ecopetrol and its equal partner Anadarko Petroleum made a natural gas discovery with their Kronos-1 well, drilled in the deepwater Caribbean Sea offshore Colombia.

Colombia’s Ecopetrol and its equal partner Anadarko Petroluem Corp. made a natural gas discovery with their Kronos-1 well, drilled in the deepwater Caribbean Sea offshore Colombia. The well encountered a 40-70 m net pay thickness of gas-bearing sandstones, the companies reported.

The well, 53 km offshore on Fuerte Sur Block 53, was drilled to a total depth of 3,720 m in 1,584 m of water.

Dolphin Drilling Ltd.’s Bolette Dolphin drillship continues to drill at this writing in search of a deeper target with possibly more hydrocarbon to discover. Once drilling concludes, the drillship will move to Fuerte Norte block to continue drilling Calasu-1, which is 145 km to the northeast.

The Kronos-1 discovery follows the successful Orca-1, drilled by Petroleo Brasileiro SA (Petrobras) on the Tayrona block in the deepwater Caribbean Sea, 40 km offshore La Guajira, Colombia (OGJ Online Dec. 8, 2014).

The Orca-1 marked the first deepwater discovery in the Colombian Caribbean Sea.

In 2013, Anadarko and Ecopetrol acquired and processed 5,500 sq km of 3D seismic in the Caribbean offshore Colombia, which included parts of the Col 5, Ura 4, Fuerte Norte, Fuerty Sur, and Purple Angel blocks (OGJ Online June 24, 2013).
