Construction has begun on the first phase of the Jagdishpur-Haldia natural gas pipeline, also known as the Energy Highway of Eastern India.

Construction has begun on the first phase of the Jagdishpur-Haldia natural gas pipeline, also known as the Energy Highway of Eastern India (OGJ Online, Mar. 15, 2013).

GAIL (India) Ltd. said the 2,050-km pipeline will connect eastern India to the national grid. Capacity of the first phase will be 7.4 million cu m/day (cmd); the entire pipeline’s capacity will be 16 million cmd.

The pipeline will pass through the states of Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal, and Uttar Pradesh.

At the July 25 inauguration ceremony in Patna, Bihar, Indian Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi said the pipeline will be “vital” in developing Bihar’s economy.

In Bihar, It will pass through 13 districts and supply gas to industries such as the Barauni refinery and Barauni fertilizer plant. GAIL said the pipeline will also help develop gas networks in cities such as Patna, Gaya, and Barauni.
