Lundin Norway AS hopes to confirm the reservoir model and presence of hydrocarbons established in its Alta oil and gas discovery with an appraisal well spudded on PL609 in the southern Barents Sea offshore Norway.

Planned total depth of the 7220/11-2 well, 6.5 km southwest of the Alta discovery, is 2,020 m below mean sea level. Drilling by the Island Drilling Island Innovator semisubmersible rig is expected to take 60 days.

Discovery well 7220/11-1, drilled in 388 m of water, encountered 11 m of gas pay and 46 m of oil pay in carbonate strata last October (OGJ Online, Oct. 14, 2014).
