Post-drilling studies conducted by Eni SPA on its Merakes-1 gas discovery have upgraded its potential to 2 tcf of gas in place from a previously estimated 1.3 tcf.

The well, which lies on the deepwater East Sepinggan block offshore Indonesia, was drilled last October in 1,372 m of water, encountering a 60-m section of high-quality sandstones (OGJ Online, Oct. 28, 2014).

The company will advance the appraisal program to evaluate the possible fast-track development of the discovery, optimizing synergies with Eni-operated Jangkrik field, 35 km north. East Sepinggan block also is 170 km south of the Bontang LNG plant.

Eni operates East Sepinggan with 85% interest.

Eni has been operating in Indonesia since 2001. Its average equity production from the country totals 17,000 boe/d.
