BHI: Shortened week sees 12-unit loss in US rig count

The US drilling rig count fell 12 units to 1,917 rigs working as the country headed into the Thanksgiving holiday during the abbreviated week ended Nov. 26, Baker Hughes Inc. reported.

Land rigs dropped 13 units to 1,851, while offshore rigs edged up a unit to 54. Rigs drilling in inland waters were unchanged at 12.

Gas rigs lost 11 units to 344. Oil rigs lost 2 units to 1,572. One rigs considered unclassified came online during the week, representing the only of its kind.

Directional drilling rigs decreased 11 units to 194, while horizontal drilling rigs edged down a unit to 1,371.

In Canada, the country’s rig count increased 4 units to 438, which was 53 more than this week a year ago. Gas rigs shot up 18 units to 209, but that jump was cut into by a 14-unit decline in oil rigs to 229.

Major states, basins

Just three of the major oil- and gas-producing states reported gains during the shortened week. North Dakota increased 3 units to 180. Colorado rose 2 units to 72. New Mexico edged up a unit to 99.

Unchanged from a week ago were Oklahoma at 214, Wyoming at 60, Pennsylvania at 56, Utah at 23, and Alaska at 9.

Louisiana, Ohio, and West Virginia each edged down a unit to 110, 44, and 31, respectively. Arkansas dropped 2 units to 10. Kansas fell 4 units to 21. Texas and California each lost 5 units to 901 and 42, respectively.

Notable movement in the major US basins included 4-unit gains in the DJ-Niobrara and Cana Woodford to 62 and 45, respectively. The Williston was up 3 to 191.
