Perenco SA has encountered noncommercial hydrocarbon pay in up to 300 m of net sandstone reservoir via the Sputnik-1 well while targeting a presalt structure on Arouwe block offshore Gabon.

The Vantage Tungsten Explorerdrillship reached a final depth of 4,868 m in 1,023 m of water, departing Arouwe following completion of activities. Perenco says the results of the well will be incorporated into wider understanding of the region.

Angus McCoss, exploration director with consortium partner Tullow Oil PLC, expounded, “This is an encouraging result from the presalt play, offshore Gabon. Having found a petroleum system, we will now take the data from this well and integrate it with our seismic data to discuss with partners our next steps for the license.”

Perenco operates Arouwe with 35% interest. Tullow and ExxonMobil Corp. hold 35% and 30%, respectively.
