Mexico’s Petroleos Mexicanos (Pemex) has let an engineering, procurement, construction, and installation (EPCI) contract to Italy’s Saipem SPA, a unit of Eni SPA, for development of Lakach gas field in the deepwater Gulf of Mexico. The deal is valued at $750 million.

The contract calls for EPCI work for the system connecting the offshore field with the onshore gas conditioning plant, including two 73-km, 18-in. flowlines for gas transport and a 50-km main umbilical.

Saipem will also develop SURF facilities comprised of subsea equipment, infield umbilicals, flexibles and trees, and control system installation. Saipem says the project will be completed by yearend 2017.

Pemex previously let a technical assistance contract to France’s Technip SA for pre-frontend engineering of infrastructure (OGJ Online, Jan. 22, 2010). Lakach lies 98 km southeast of Mexico’s Veracruz state and 131 km northwest of Veracruz port city Coatzacoalcos in 850-1,200 m of water.

Separately, Mexico’s Protexa has let a transportation and installation contract to Saipem for installation of various offshore structures, including two 3,000-tonne platform decks in the Bay of Campeche, part of Pemex’s shallow-water development.
