MEG Energy Corp., Calgary, has submitted an Oil Sands Conservation Act application with Alberta Energy Regulator for its Surmont steam-assisted gravity drainage (SAGD) project.

The northeastern Alberta site is in the regional municipality of Wood Buffalo, about 80 km south of Fort McMurray.

MEG Energy envisions 55 multiwell production pads and a central processing facility with three processing trains for steam generation, cogeneration, bitumen and water treatment, and sulfur recovery. Maximum bitumen production capacity would be 123,000 b/d from the McMurray formation.

The project would withdraw water from the Grand Rapids formation for domestic and utility purposes during construction and from the Clearwater formation for steam generation and utilities during the estimated 25-year life of the project.

AER said it is reviewing the OSCA application along with three environmental reports.
