The latest deepwater drillship has arrived and started operations for Chevron Corp. in the Keathley Canyon area of the Gulf of Mexico.

Chevron’s fifth drillship in deepwater gulf, Pacific Sharav is working under a 5-year contract with Pacific Drilling SA.

The vessel is an upgraded dual-load-path, Samsung-12000-design, dynamically positioned drillship modified to accept a dual-gradient drilling system. It’s capable of operating in moderate environments and in as much as 12,000 ft of water.

Chevron in 2011 discovered more than 380 ft of net pay in the Lower Tertiary Wilcox sands on its Moccasin prospect on Keathley Canyon Block 736 (OGJ Online, Sept. 6, 2011).

“Chevron subsidiaries are among the top lease holders in the Gulf of Mexico and the area continues to be a key enabler in our growth plans, which includes our Jack-St. Malo project, due to come online this year (OGJ Online, Mar. 13, 2014),” said Jeff Shellebarger, president of Chevron North America E&P Co.
