Borealis AG, Vienna, has let a service contract to Neste Jacobs Oy of Finland for work related to an upgrade of the ethane steam cracker at subsidiary Borealis AB’s petrochemical complex in Stenungsund, Sweden.

Neste Jacobs will deliver engineering, procurement, and construction management services for an upgrade of the cracker’s processing section to enable increased cracking of ethane at the unit, according to a Sept. 16 release from Neste Jacobs.

The upgraded steam cracker, which is designed to produce 625,000 tpy of ethylene, will process ethane feedstocks Borealis imports from the US, Neste Jacobs said.

Borealis’s total investment for the project, which will include the addition of an ethane storage tank, amounts to about $155.4 million, according to Neste Jacobs.

A timeframe for the project was not disclosed.

Already one of the most feedstock-flexible crackers in Europe, the Stenungsund cracker also processes naphtha, propane, and butane, according to Borealis’s website.
