A group led by Santos Ltd. has made a gas and condensate discovery in the Lasseter-1/ST1 well drilled in the Browse basin offshore Western Australia.
Operator Santos said the well reached 5,329 m measured depth relative to the rotary table. Water depth is 404 m.
The well intersected a gross gas-condensate interval of 405 m. Wireline logging has confirmed 78 m of net pay over the Jurassic-aged Lower Vulcan and Plover intervals, between 4,880 and 5,285 m.
Initial analysis from multiple samples confirms a condensate-to-gas ratio of 10-25 bbl/MMscf and “excellent mobility in the higher porosity sands in the Lower Vulcan.”
The well will be plugged and abandoned as planned.
“The Lasseter discovery is well positioned, in close proximity to existing and proposed LNG projects in the Browse basin and other material Santos joint venture exploration projects,” said Bill Ovenden, Santos’ head of exploration. “The Lower Vulcan reservoir system, which is optimally developed between the Ichthys and Poseidon structural trends, holds great promise.”
Partners in Block WA-274-P are Santos, 30%; Chevron Corp., 50%; and Inpex Corp., 20%. The companies will study possibilities of commercial development.
Inpex said the block is about 50 km west-northwest of the Ichthys gas-condensate field, where Inpex is developing the Ichthys LNG project. Inpex referred to the block and its surroundings as “an area of high exploration potential.”
The companies in 2012 discovered gas-condensate in the same block at the Crown-1/ST1 exploration well (OGJ Online Nov. 19, 2012), 35 km west-northwest of the Lasseter well.
