Statoil ASA has lifted two 6,000-tonne compressors aboard its Troll A platform in the Norwegian North Sea. The company says the compressors will boost recovery from Troll by more than 83 billion standard cu m of gas once they are running next year.

The project will result in export capacity of 120 million standard cu m/day of gas and production of 30 billion standard cu m/year.

The compressors will make it "possible to extract the gas more quickly, while also increasing the technical lifetime of Troll A,” said Tone Kristin Borslid, Statoil’s asset owner representative for the project.

While the compressor module was en route from Thailand, power cables were laid from Troll A to shore to supply power. Five cables, each totaling about 70 km, were laid between Kollsnes, Norway and the platform. Four of the cables are direct current (DC) and were installed in pairs. Statoil let the installation contract to ABB in 2012 (OGJ Online, Aug. 28, 2012).

The compressors on Troll, Kvitebjorn, Asgard, Kristin, and Heidrun will contribute more than 1.2 billion boe, the company states.
