BHI also recently reported that the number of US oil and gas rigs in May totaled 1,859, 24 more than in April, and 92 more than in May 2013. It was the highest count since September 2012.

During the week, land rigs comprised the entirety of the US increase, up 4 to 1,784. Rigs drilling offshore, at 59, and rigs drilling in inland waters, at 15, were unchanged from a week ago.

Oil rigs tallied 3 units to 1,545 while gas rigs edged up a unit to 311. Rigs considered unclassified were unchanged at 2 units working.

Directional drilling rigs jumped 10 units to 228. Horizontal drilling rigs rose 2 units to 1,250.

Canada experienced a 21-unit rise in its rig count, bringing the country’s total to 265, up 68 units from this week a year ago. Oil rigs jumped 17 units to 166 while gas rigs rose 4 units to 99.

Major states, basins

In the major oil- and gas-producing states, light upward movement consisted of Colorado’s 3-unit gain to 68, Louisiana’s and Ohio’s 2-unit gains to 109 and 40. Texas and North Dakota each edged up a unit to 889 and 170, respectively.

Unchanged from a week ago were Oklahoma at 200, Wyoming at 51, California at 47, Kansas at 33, Utah at 27, and Arkansas at 11.

New Mexico, West Virginia, and Alaska each edged down a unit to respective totals of 90, 25, and 9. Pennsylvania’s 2-unit loss to 57 was the most of the bunch.

A handful of the major US basins reported 2-unit gains, including the Eagle Ford to 215, DJ-Niobrara to 60, and Utica to 42. The Permian and Marcellus, meanwhile, each fell 3 units to 553 and 80, respectively.
