The US drilling rig count dropped 6 units for the second consecutive week, settling at 1,854 rigs working during the week ended June 13, Baker Hughes Inc. reported.
Land rigs fell 7 units to 1,780 as offshore rigs edged up a unit to 59. Rigs drilling in inland waters were unchanged from a week ago at 15.
Gas rigs dropped 10 units to 310, overcoming a 6-unit rise in oil rigs to 1,542. The number of rigs considered unclassified was cut in half to just 2 units working.
Directional drilling rigs relinquished 3 units to 218. Horizontal drilling lost 2 units to 1,248.
In Canada, a 30-unit jump consisted of oil rigs spiking 27 units to 149 and gas rigs rising 3 units to 95. Canada now has 68 more rigs compared with this week a year ago.
Major states, basins
More of the major oil- and gas-producing states in the US reported gains than losses. With a 5-unit increase, New Mexico claims 91 rigs overall. Wyoming gained 3 units to 51. Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, and Kansas each added 2 units to reach respective totals of 200, 59, and 33. West Virginia edged up 1 unit to 26.
Unchanged from a week ago were North Dakota at 169, Colorado at 65, Utah at 27, Arkansas at 11, and Alaska at 10.
California and Ohio were each down 1 unit to respective counts of 47 and 38. Louisiana declined 4 units to 107. Texas plunged 8 units to 888.
Heightened activity in the major US basins was headlined by an 8-unit jump in the Permian to 556, a 5-unit rise in the DJ-Niobrara to 58, and a 4-unit fall in the Williston to 174.
