The US drilling rig count increased 9 units to reach 1,818 rigs working during the week ended Apr. 4, Baker Hughes Inc. reported.
Land-based rigs collected 13 more units to reach 1,754 total, while offshore rigs lost 3 units to settle at 47. Rigs drilling in inland water dropped 1 unit to 17.
Oil rigs were up 11 units to 1,498. Gas rigs fell 2 units to 316. Rigs considered unclassified were unchanged at 4.
A 13-unit gain in horizontal drilling rigs to 1,224 was offset by a 13-unit decline in directional drilling rigs to 201.
Canada’s rig count relinquished 63 units to settle at a total of 235. A majority of those units were oil rigs, which fell 45 units to 110. Gas rigs declined 18 units to 125. Canada still has 29 more rigs than this week a year ago.
Major states, basins
For the second straight week, Texas claimed the largest rise of the major oil-and gas-producing states, gaining 11 units to 877. Neighboring Oklahoma reported the next highest number, collecting 5 more units to reach 193. Pennsylvania increased 3 units to 54. New Mexico grabbed 2 units to 90.
Unchanged from a week ago were North Dakota at 178, Ohio at 38, Utah at 27, West Virginia at 26, and Arkansas at 12.
Colorado, Wyoming, and California each edged down 1 unit to respective totals of 62, 49, and 38. Kansas fell 2 units to 27. Alaska declined 3 units, reducing its total to 11. Louisiana ended the week at 99 rigs working, down 6.
In the major US basins, the Permian again gained the most rigs, increasing 6 units to 524. The Marcellus and Granite Wash were up 3 units to 79 and 58, respectively.
