Petrobras confirms deepwater oil find with Pitu well

Petroleo Brasileiro SA (Petrobras) has announced that its 1-BRSA-1205-RNS (1-RNS-158) wildcat well has completed drilling.

The well, also known as Pitu, is in the Potiguar basin in 1,731 m of water 55 km offshore Brazil’s Rio Grande do Norte. The well reached a total depth of 5,353 m and the discovered a 188-m column of intermediate 24º gravity API oil. According to Petrobras, formation testing confirmed the reservoir’s permeability and porosity.

The consortium consisting of Petrobras (as operator) with an 80% interest and Petrogal Brasil SA (20%) will proceed with exploratory activities. This will include submitting a discovery evaluation plan for the BM-POT-17 concession to Brazil’s National Petroleum, Natural Gas, and Biofuels Agency.

BP Energy do Brasil Ltda. will join the consortium as part of an ongoing farm out process with 40% of Petrobras’s interest (OGJ Online, July 16, 2013).
