Qatar Petrochemical Co. Ltd. (Qapco) has let a front-end engineering and design contract to Italy’s Tecnimont SPA for the Al Sejeel petrochemical complex at Ras Laffan.

With the award of the FEED contract alongside technology selection agreements and the project management contract awarded earlier in the year (OGJ Online, July 10, 2013), the Al Sejeel project is now entering its fourth phase of nearing completion, Qapco said.

The complex will include an ethylene cracker fed by natural gas produced from Qatari projects and will produce ethylene, high-density polyethylene, linear low-density polyethylene, polypropylene, and butadiene, and will be designed to produce 2.2 million tonnes/year of polymers.

The project—which is part of Qatar’s large-scale expansion of the petrochemicals sector and will help raise the country’s petrochemical output to 23 million tpy by 2020—is scheduled for completion in 2018, Qapco said.

Al Sejeel is a joint development of Qatar Petroleum and Qapco, each holding 80% and 20% equity interest, respectively.
