The US drilling rig count gained 7 units to reach 1,782 rigs working in the week ended Dec. 13, Baker Hughes Inc. reported.
The addition was reflected in a 7-unit increase in land rigs to 1,703. Growth of 2 units in rigs drilling in inland waters to 20 was offset by a 2-unit decline in offshore rigs to 59.
Oil rigs were up 14 units to 1,411 while gas rigs lost 6 units to 369. Rigs considered unclassified fell a single unit to a total of 2 rigs working.
There were 7 more rigs drilling directionally this week, reaching 230. Horizontal drilling rigs tallied 8 units to 1,145.
Canada’s rig count spiked 24 units to 426. A 25-unit increase in oil rigs to 255 trumped a 1-unit decrease in gas rigs to 171. Canada now has 8 more rigs working compared with this week last year.
Major states, basins
Four of the major oil- and gas-producing states reported gains, most notably North Dakota’s 7-unit increase to 174 and Texas’s 6-unit rise to 848. Colorado claimed 4 more units to 70. With 1-unit additions, Pennsylvania and Kansas rose to respective totals of 54 and 31. Unchanged from a week ago were New Mexico at 78, Ohio at 35, Arkansas at 11, and Alaska at 9. Louisiana, Wyoming, California, and West Virginia each edged down a unit to 109, 56, 36, and 34, respectively. Utah declined 5 units to 23. Oklahoma saw the largest loss of the week, with its total shrinking 6 units to 174.
In the major US basins, the Williston benefitted from the largest jump, tallying 8 more units to reach 187. The Permian and DJ-Niobrara each rose 4 units to 477 and 52, respectively. The largest loss came in the Granite Wash, which relinquished 5 units to a total of 57.
