Land-based rigs gained 7 units to 1,666 while rigs drilling offshore relinquished 3 units to 59. Unchanged from a week ago were rigs drilling in inland waters.

A 19-unit spike in oil rigs to 1,376 was cut into by a 16-unit decline in gas rigs to 360. Rigs considered unclassified picked up 1 unit from a week ago to 6.

Horizontal drilling rigs rose 6 units to 1,104 while directional drilling rigs gave up 19 units to 230.

Canada lost 10 units compared with a week ago to 394 rigs working. Gas rigs tallied 6 units to 161, which was trumped by a 16-unit loss in oil rigs to 233. Canada still boasts 11 more rigs working compared with this week last year.

Major states, basins

After three consecutive weeks of reporting the steepest declines of the major oil- and gas-producing states, Texas gained some ground previously lost by adding 9 units to reach 821 rigs working. Wyoming saw a 6-unit increase to 55. Kansas was up 2 units to 25. Oklahoma and West Virginia each gained 1 unit to respective totals of 176 and 31. California at 42, Ohio at 34, and Arkansas at 12 were unchanged from a week ago. New Mexico and Utah each dropped 1 unit to 74 and 28, respectively. Pennsylvania and Alaska each fell by 2 units to respective totals of 56 and 10. With a 3-unit loss, Louisiana and Colorado settled to 105 and 70, respectively. North Dakota's 8-unit decline to 163 marked the largest loss.

A 7-unit gain in the Permian to 451 and a 4-unit addition to the Eagle Ford to 226 represented the noteworthy gains among the major US basins. The Williston, meanwhile, lost 7 units to 175.
