The US drilling rig count jumped 12 units to 1,756 rigs working during the week ended Oct. 4, Baker Hughes Inc. reported.
Eleven of those units were land-based, bringing that total to 1,674. Offshore rigs edged up 1 unit to 65. Rigs drilling in inland waters remained unchanged at 17 from a week ago.
Oil rigs picked up 10 units to 1,372 and gas rigs tallied 2 units to 378. Six rigs were considered unclassified, which is unchanged from a week ago.
Horizontal drilling rigs added 14 units to reach 1,099. Directional drilling rigs, meanwhile, edged down 1 unit to 241.
Canada lost 29 rigs compared with a week ago, settling at 361 rigs working. Twenty-three of those lost were targeting oil, bringing the total of those rigs to 209. Rigs drilling for gas in Canada, meanwhile, were down 6 units to 152. Canada has 11 fewer rigs working compared with this week a year ago.
Major states, basins
Adding 5 units each, Texas and Oklahoma experienced the largest increases of the major oil and gas producing states to reach respective totals of 830 and 171. Louisiana climbed 4 units to 112. Pennsylvania and California were each up 2 units to 54 and 42, respectively. Unchanged were North Dakota at 171, Colorado at 70, Wyoming at 49, West Virginia at 34, Utah at 29, and Arkansas at 11. New Mexico, Ohio, and Kansas each dropped 1 unit to 73, 34, and 28, respectively. Alaska’s 2-unit loss to 7 represented the steepest decline this week.
Noteworthy changes this week in major US basins included 2-unit gains in the Granite Wash to 65 rigs working and Haynesville to 40 rigs working. Meanwhile, the Eagle Ford was down 2 units to 227.
