Dana Petroleum, Aberdeen, has begun drilling 2 months ahead of schedule at its $1.6 billion Western Isles project to develop Harris and Barra oil and gas fields in the northern UK North Sea.

The Diamond Offshore Ocean Nomad semisubmersible is making hole 160 km east of the Shetland Islands and 12 km west of the Tern field. The nine-well development is expected to produce more than 40,000 bbl of oil equivalent, adding more than 30,000 bbl net to Dana’s daily production when it comes onstream in 2015.

The project involves subsea development of at least five production wells and four water injectors plus two exploratory wells. The producers and injectors will be tied back to a newly built floating production, storage, and offloading vessel. Subsea installation is set for summer 2014 and FPSO installation summer 2015.

Oil production is to start in 2015, and the estimated field life is 15 years.

Interests in Western Isles are Dana 77% and Cieco 23%.
