The US drilling rig count lost 7 rigs to settle at 1,761 rotary rigs working during the week ended Sept. 20, Baker Hughes Inc. reported.
All 7 of those rigs were land-based, bringing that total to 1,675. The US currently has 112 fewer land rigs compared with a year ago this week. Rigs drilling offshore and in inland waters were unchanged from a week ago.
Oil rigs added 8 units to 1,369 while gas-targeted rigs dropped 15 units to 386. Six rigs were considered unclassified, the same number as a week ago.
Horizontal drilling rigs increased by 15 units to 1,091. Directional drilling rigs, meanwhile, edged up by 1 unit to 249.
Canada reported 388 rigs working, 8 more than a week ago, including an increase of 5 oil rigs to reach 243 units and 3 gas rigs to reach 145.
Major states, basins
Texas displayed the largest loss of rigs among major oil and gas producting states, down 14 to 836. Pennsylvania was off by 4 units to 50. Oklahoma declined by 2 units to settle at 162. Arkansas fell 1 unit to reach 12. Unchanged from last week were Louisiana, 113; Wyoming, 50; Utah, 30; and Alaska, 12. New Mexico, West Virginia, and Ohio each experienced a 1-unit bump to respective totals of 71, 37, and 35. Kansas was up by 2 units to reach 29. North Dakota and Colorado added 3 units each to reach respective counts of 171 and 70. California saw a 4-rig increase in its count, reaching 40 rigs this week.
Noteworthy changes this week in major US basins included a 6-unit gain in the Mississippian to 76. The Barnett added 4 units to reach 35. The Granite Wash was down 4 units to 64 rigs working. An 8-rig loss for the Permian brought its total to 452, 49 fewer than a year ago.
